Good stuff.

As for "Legends of the Fall," my then GF and I saw it in the theater and i think we left early because we were laughing at all of the scenery chewing. The Anthony Hopkins stroke bit was too histrionic for both of us.
"A River Runs Through It" is an excellent filum, though

I vaguely recall, way back when, one of my then-wife's friends giving her a copy of Legends because of Brad Armpit being the hot rage at the time. After about 20 minutes, I was sitting there babbling WTF over and over. I think the wife lasted about 10 minutes longer before she came to the same conclusion. The only distinct memory I have left is trying to figure out why the movie makers expected me to believe that any turn-of-the-century man walked around with shoulder length hair like Boy Brad.

Black Dahlia.

I screamed.

Not because I was scared.

But because the movie sucked.

I was suprised- and really disappointed- being interested in the Black Dahlia murder, one would expect a movie called the Black Dahlia would primarily deal with that- but no, in this movie, the focus is on a pair of boxers that become cops, Josh Hartnett loving, then hating, then loving, then hating, ect Scarlett Johansen and Hillary Swank, and a small iota of the Black Dahlia murder to tie in this somewhat distantly related story to the murder of elisabeth Short.

Last night I saw "Ghost Rider".
I read that this movie cost almost $100 million to make.Couldnt tell by the special effects,the quality of direction,or the quality of acting,or the script,or....well,you get my drift.This is B-grade comic book filmaking,on a par with the Punisher,and I dont mean that in a good way.I was really disapointed with the acting,since they had quite a good cast.Now I know why this film wasnt prescreened for critics.Not horrible,but definetly not a first class film.Your kids might like it,as long as ghosts and such dont scare them.
Guess I gotta wait for 300,and for Spiderman 3.

Saw The Departed a couple nights ago at home with my wife. The cast was Nicholson, DeCaprio, and Damon. Anything with Jack is good with me.

The movie was full of deception about a police department trying to bust a mobster's ring. Really good movie and I'm no Siskel and Ebert, matter of fact I really don't like movies other than they're fun to sleep to on the couch.

I don't know if such a small german production will ever reach US cinemas, but if, give it a chance...

"We are Marshall". It's a very true story and the movie does an outstanding job of telling it. As I mentioned in another thread, I challenge you not to choke up and I dare you not to cheer.

My son rented Hamlet (Franco Zefirelli version) last night, the one with Mel Gibson and Glen Close; we watched it this morning. The 21 year-old that likes all kind of action movies, really surprised me!

Just watched Friday Night Lights. I had forgotten I had already seen it. Good movie though.

Last night I watched Lost Highway and it is still running through my head.
A bit like Donnie Darko in that you have to concentrate the whole time to try and work it out.
I'm not sure that I have yet but they are both well worth a look.

Romper stomper: early 90's australian film that put Russell Crowe on the map there and in Europe. about a group of skinheads, its an independent film with tons of energy from the young cast, commentary track revealed how wild they really were: 3 :thmbsp:

Lost in translation: I avoided this for years due to the fear of it being too awkward, pretentious, or something:dunno: But it's really a very good movie about "normal" people in a strange environment making the best of it, Bill Murray still manages to be funny in spots 3 1/2 :thmbsp:

Narc: Ray Liotta is outstanding as usual as is Jason Patric. This is another independent film that managed to rise above its budget, very good and gritty. 3 :thmbsp:

The three musketeers [1974] ; [DVD] The four musketeers [1975]: Liked the first one best, lots of humor and they manage to stay true to the spirit of the book at least part of the time. Raquel Welch and Faye Dunaway in medieval French attire helps. 3 :thmbsp:

Spider: Cronenberg film starring Ralph Fiennes; most would probably check out of this one early on, very slow and quiet really but I loved it: 3 1/2 :thmbsp:

Saw "Music and Lyrics" with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore over the weekend. Definitely a chick-flick but still a good movie with a musical slant. I'd rate it an 8 on a 10-point scale.

:dunno: I watched "Beerfest" at a friends the other nite. I wasn't drunk or stoned so the humor mostly escaped me.

Been a while since I saw Narc but I remember it being a very good movie also.

"Office Space", one of my favorite comedy's to just kick back with. Great cast, and easy to watch, you don't have to be a genius to get the jokes. The DVD came with some neat extras, such as the history of the red Swingline stapler, which there was never was one made at the time. The prop department painted it red. It became such an icon, that Swigline started making them in red! "Damn, it feels good to be a gangster!"

My wife and I just returned from seeing The Lives of Others. We both agree that this is the best movie we have seen in the past twelve months. This is a powerful and gripping drama that is very thought provoking. The majority of the story is set in the German Democratic Republic in 1984. A popular playwright becomes the target of a Stazi investigation when a high ranking official takes a liking to his actress woman friend. German with English subtitles. Most highly recommended.

I just watched Cimmaron as I am an Irene Dunne fan. This movie sucked.

Cast: Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench, Andrew Simpson, Max Lewis and Juno Temple

Four Academy Award nominations for this thoughtful movie that constantly reveals the complexity of the characters lives. We saw this on Saturday. :thmbsp: :thmbsp: Judi Dench's performance is outstanding. Recommended.

Broke out Little Big Man for a family night of movies, Kids started out like, Awwww...

I went to see "Norbit" last night. I was in the mood for something light and silly. Well, it was silly alright. It was really quite a waste of time. It is not suitable for pre-teen kids either, although the humor seemed to target that age group. My advice is, given a choice, see something else.:thumbsdn:

I did! There is also a Mc system in Jack Nicholson's apartment in the movie "As good as it gets".

Troy was the last movie i watched. Somehow, it came to be one of my top films. I can watch it over and over. I love that genre, like gladiator, and LOTR. I can't wait for 300 also. That looks amazing.

A very good movie. Some parts are hard to watch. Recommended for adults but not childern.

Last two, The Best Years Of Our Lives (1946). A Star Is Born (1939). Fredric March seemed to age quite a bit between these two pictures.

Finshed watching "Lion of the Desert" last night. Its 2 1/2 hours long and was made in 1980. Directed by the guy with perhaps the coolest name ever, Moustaffa Akkad, and starring Anthony Quinn & Oliver Reed, it deals with the Italian occupation of Libya during Mussollini's time and the Arab resistance led by another guy with a great name, Omar Mukhtar. The picture is a little grainy but the movie is very good, excellent acting, great attention to historical detail, and an inspirational moving story. Not sure why I'd never heard of it. Thumbs up!

Just finished "Flyboys" on DVD
I picked it up because I've always had a thing for WWI biplanes and in that regard it was excellent. The dogfights and CGI really was pretty top notch and made the film.
That aside, it was pretty much standard, ho-hum predictable with zero surprises, except that Jean Reno was really nothing more than window dressing and just sleepwalked through his part..........

Most don't realize is an adaptaion of a Graphic Novel (ie. comic book) of the same title. That is the reason for the grandiose imagery and characterizations.

Tombstone, the one with Kurt Russel and Val Kilmer. Seen it so many times but it’s still worth watching if only for the "Gun trick" Scene Doc Holiday steals, and the actual gunfight. That is probably one of the most true to life enactments of a face to face western gunfight ever put to the silver screen. The fear, the first draw and how it occurs. The running, the blind shooting at times, and the sudden cessation of shooting when it’s over.

I doubt it’s what really happened blow by blow, but few gunfights were of the classic “high noon meet in the street”, and this scene really impresses me in its human portrayal of the characters, whether the characters actually were like that or not. The different emotions they portray I think are accurate of different peoples reactions to that sort of fight.

Saw "Hombre" last night. Don't know how I missed it with all the TV watching we do, but I thought it was kinda boring. Has to have the least amount of dialogue ever. Paul Newman did the best he could on this one.

Yeah,I saw it too.Really good movie.I thought it was something that they had been looking for this traitor for decades,and the traitor was leading the investigation.Ryan Phillipe looked like he was punching way out of his weight class alongside the great Chris Cooper.

He won the oscar for Adaptation.Thats a strange,complex performance,if ever Ive seen one.He was also great in American Beauty.
His rugged looks probably made it hard for him to break into Hollywood.But sometimes talent wins out over looks.Look at Kathy Bates,or Robert Duval or Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

300 (at theater) -- great movie, quite possibly the most violent movie I've ever seen, incredibly gory, albeit almost entirely CGI
Unforgiven (on DVD) -- quite good, but I was not prepared for the pacing, now that I know, will have to see it again

Shooter,with Mark Wahlberg and Danny Glover.It felt like one of those late 80's,early 90's action flicks where you kill tons of people and there doesnt have to be any logic,and there are no consequenses for your actions.
In other words,I enjoyed it a lot.Good fun as long as you turn your brain off.

Did a triple feature last night complete with an episode of Get Smart, a Three Stooges short and some Pulp Trailers.

This required one can of Starbucks Iced Coffee and one can of Red Bull:D

First up was "The Scarface Mob" a Westinghouse/Desilu production about Eliot Ness, originally a two part TV production it was edited into a feature film and released to theaters.
This was excellent, very high production values and Burlesque scene that seems pretty racy for 1959 TV!

Next up was the pilot for "The Streets of San Francisco"
Very nostalgic for anyone who grew up watching TV in the early 70's, the ending was kind of silly but enjoyable.

Last but not least was the pilot episode of "Moonlighting"
I have never watched a single episode of this show till last night but I'll be catching up now.

The Usual Suspects. It was okay.

I really liked the Usual Suspects and the directors comments after I watched it made me enjoy it all the better as I couldn't believe I missed all the clues that were shown.

Lord of the Rings all three flicks, over the past week. Directors cut, with added footage.

Great Flick, but 2 hours a night for 6 nights, is better than 3 VERY late nights...

On the plane back from Taiwan on Friday, I watched some movie called Blood Diamond with Dicaprio as a South African diamond smuggler or something like that. It was an airplane movie, that's about it.

Also some Spielberg produced movie about a geisha girl, no idea of the title. I think it won some sort of academy awards- it was pretty to look at, but not particularly interesting as a story.

Watched Gregory Peck as Ahab in Moby Dick last night on Turner Classic Movies. Directed by John Huston with screen play by Isaac Asimov (of all people!!)

Well done, with fairly realistic seafaring scenes, considering it was done in 1956. Give it a 3*

The Grindhouse double-bill, last week, on a big screen. I loved it.

Very funny. Quite obscene.

Skewered some of my sacred cows, which made it all the funnier (don't skip the "censored" extras on the DVD).

...The Last King of Scotland...Forrest Whittaker is amazing as Idi Amin.
The film has many terrific moments, but focuses too much on the doctor telling the story as opposed to detailing Amin more. But well worth seeing.

Watched it last night. (4-16-07) Jack Nicholson-as usual- was great. That other guy- I think it was Matt Damon- ok. That other guy- Mark Walhberg- horrible actor. That other guy- Leonardo DiCaprio- what a really crappy TV actor he is. My wife made the comment every time he hit somebody- "He hits like a girl!" Scale of 1 to 10: 7, only cause Jack is such a loon! :smoke:

Empire of the Sun

This on is about the invasion of Shanghai (the Brit colony on the Coast of China) by the Japanese after Pearl Harbor as seen from the eyes of a 12 year old boy separated from his parents and caught up in an internment camp.

Old School Drama is where I’d place this one. I liked it quite a lot, but some won’t. Grim at times and a little depressing of an end, even if it was ultimately supposed to be a happy ending.

Hellboy, The Sword of Storms -- woulda been okay on Saturday morning...

Curse of the Golden Flower -- thoroughly enjoyed it. A large scale drama (including an extended war sequence) made me think of an opera or Shakespeare.

Night At The Museum.

Good special effects, entertaining enough but overall rather forgettable.

At least it had Mickey Rooney and Dick Van Dyke.

Casino Royale... Don't know what others saw in this one,but I could not get through it. Here we go again...all special effects...no story.Absolute boredom.I turned it off with no regrets...bring back the old James Bond mystique.

Pursuit of Happyness..slow at times, but very enjoyable.Will Smith deserves all the recognition he received for this one.

A Night to Remember.This is the laserdisc version (Criterion) and it is the best
story of the Titanic tragedy and mystery I've personally seen.Fantastic movie.
Cameron's '97 Titanic was not all that bad,but it was too much of a love story for my taste.Great music and sound,tho'.If anyone has the DTS laserdisc version of this latest movie and wants to part with it..I'm willing to take it off your hands.:wave:

Wonderful Japanese Anime. We rented it for our grandsons. It's the story of a 13 year old witch who goes on her year's sabbatical to discover her abilities and talents. It's a great story excellently done.

I really wanted to enjoy this movie, but it never happened. I got that on DVD last week and had a real hard time watching it. Damon's character, well, most of the characters, were so boring and uncompelling that I kept waiting to be drawn in but it never happened.
I tried watching it 3 times at bed and it just never got my attention. A line here and there was OK, but overall tedious would be a generous description.

Classic example of what happens when a quirky low budget British film is an unexpected success. High budget, high body count follow up; lots of bangs for the buck. I think the scriptwriter was one of the first casualties:no:

Very disappointing! I expected a movie about music, not a musical.

Starts out promising enough but about 45 minutes in they start singing the dialog, (Note, the first 45 minutes or so did not set it up to be a musical, it just sort of springs up unexpectedly!) the songs are largely annoying to boot.

Yes, Jennifer Hudson can sing, we get it, but they beat you over the head with it so hard you want to break the DVD in half.

I really liked 28 Weeks Later, a worthy follow-up.

Also saw Versus on DVD. Martial Arts (fist-fighting, kick-fighting, sword-fighting, gunplay) and zombies, but does become an exercise in tedium somewhere about the middle (and then goes back to being a good movie). Lots of Three Stooges/Evil Dead -type humour.

Black Book (Zwartboek). I recommend this movie highly. Lots of twists and turns and plenty of excitement.

Synopsis: This thriller set in The Netherlands during World War II is based on the true story of Rachel Stein, a young, pretty Jewish woman hiding from the Nazis who falls for a high-ranking Gestapo officer while seeking revenge for her family's murders. I also have the recording of Little lite of love played at the end of the movie by Peter Gabriel

Eric Serra, who did the excellent soundtrack for the Fifth Element, is the one singing the song. Although many do compare his voice to Peter Gabriel, Peter Gabriel did NOT sing that song. The girl singing in the song is also NOT Milla Jovovich either.

Eric Serra is often called the artist RXRA which is dumb cause that was an ALBUM name of his.

The Fifth Element Soundtrack, which is excellent, is one I listen to when testing gear and speakers. It has some mean low bass on certain tracks. It's interesting to compare speakers with certain tracks on that CD. I'd LOVE to find that soundtrack on vinyl.

I'm a huge fan of the movie. First time I saw it, I liked it, but didn't love it. Went back to the theater a couple days later to see it again. Loved it.

Milla is a total babe.

Milla is in it, she's swell. BTW, Marilyn Manson did the instrumental score for the first RE movie. The opening track Resident Evil Main Title Theme is most excellent. Even more so in the theater with all that pounding bass.

The soundtrack instrumentals were specifically done to creep people out and make you uneasy. A lot of research went into it to make it actually affect people who heard it. There was a pretty in depth article/interview I read/saw of MM and how much research and time he spent on this soundtrack. It's an awful shame he did not do the second one...the second one was weak and had a horrible soundtrack. I will say the only reason I felt on edge during the first movie, first viewing in a theater was simply because it was SO LOUD. Once on DVD it did not have the same effect on me. Still creepy sort of but the beginning of the movie and that main theme is awesome.

3rd one will be out this summer.


In regards to any Pixar film, all are good, even the weakest.

In regards to Hayao Miyazaki

Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and more are all excellent. IMDB him. So far I have yet to be disappointed by any of his work. Castle in the Sky was awesome. Initially I couldn't stand the granny character...but the robots in that movie are so awesome. Howl's moving castle wasn't, IMO as good as the others I've mentioned, but it was still good.

The Departed was awesome. Jack was a riot.

I saw the 300 recently, cool for what it was, a "graphic novel" (that's new PC correct or whatever terminoligy for a movie based on A COMIC BOOK!).

Man of the Year was pretty darn funny. I avoided it and glad I actually decided eh, give it a shot. It had a really really really really rahhhiiiiiiiiiihiiiihiiily weak computer glitch plot, but the funny was brung and it was brung well, the funny makes up for anything weak.

I recently watched Cowboy Bebop: The Movie.

Really need to just deal with it and buy the redone 5.1 release of the TV series. Cowboy Bebop is awesome.

I need to get my copy of Shaun of the Dead back from my friend. I also need to go see Hot Fuzz. Shaun of the Dead was hilarious. Hot Fuzz is supposed to be equally if not funnier.

Also...for anyone who liked the Fifth Element, or any of Luc Besson's other films(IMDB him) the Transporter and weaker sequel are cool...

Angel A is his new movie(not sure when release date is)...within the last couple of years there were reports that he was done with movies and a certain one would be his last. According to IMDB he's on as producer for several movies in 08/09...

About a week or so ago I was dragged, screaming, to a special 20th anniversary re-release screening of Dirty Dancing. It's better than I'd remembered, particularly all of the atmospheric, period schtick associated with the Catskills resorts. The original songs recorded for the film are pretty dull stuff (Time of Our Lives, She's Like The Wind, etc.), but the period music used during the scenes in the "dirty dancing" room is outstanding.

Saw 300 as well, I have to second the general approval for this movie. Very entertaining.

As expected with them, very dark, beautiful stuff, with live action, animation, and an ambiguous story. Not casual viewing, but memorable. Very fine DVD transfer also.

Caught "Cranes are Flying" on TCM by chance; had been a while so I watched it again. Great melodrama in a very Russian style; Citizen Kane-like cinematography.
A powerful anti-war film.

Last week my friend turned me onto Layer Cake, 2004. With Daniel Craig. Drugs, whacks, proper English hoods and a convoluted story. It was entertaining albeit hard to follow at times. Overall a decent movie.

Saw Pan's Labyrinth a few days ago. Wow. It's a film where the director wants you to come to certain conclusions and isn't afraid to let you know that. It's too intense and violent for children and probably many adults. There is a lot of beauty and imagination on the screen (along with some grotesque characters and behavior). Overall it is easily worth checking out, even though you have to read subtitles unless you understand Spanish.

I just saw Army Of Shadows,a French film about the Resistance.Grim,powerful stuff.Never before released on dvd here,and rarely seen in the states,period.The director,Jean Pierre Melville also directed Bob The Gambler,another classic.If you dont mind subtitles,I highly recommend it.

Watched The Last King of Scotland this afternoon the performances where all round powerful tense scary that made my skin crawl highly recommended.

Dolby six-track sound with centre back height added a claustrophobic wrap around that was closing on me atmospheric crowd scenes seemed incredible realistic dialogue was clear even when (Forest Whitaker) “Amin” playing the genocide mad man placed me on edge knowing this someone who will snap in heart beat his tone reverberated with chilling class. (James McAvoy) “Dr. Nicholas Garrigan” was most defiantly in over his head and picked the wrong country at the wrong time.

Framed at 2.35:1 scope was clear rich tones of colour easy on the eye.

"Breach" wasn't available at the local video outlet, so I rented "Bobby" and "Little Children."

Enjoyed both, the latter is quite riveting and slightly disturbing. A fine film.

Last Night, the Lake House. Surprisingly good. Not amuch os a Keanu Reeves fan, but it was well done. SWMBO really liked it.

The "Time travleing mial box" created a lot of confusion about timelines, but very effective once you accepted it as a a fact for the storyline.

Two weeks ago we watched a Japanise movie called "Death Book", Subtitled, and apparantly very popular in Japan. A fun flick, but sort of stupid at times. the Subtitles were sometimes difficult to keep up with.

Some good twists, and hard to decide who were the bad guys at times...

Pan's Labyrinth -- ditto to what everyone else said, great film, but may be too dark/violent/whatever for some. I actually thought it might be too dark for the wife of the friend of mine, but she still managed to enjoy it, so I was wrong about that. But back to the movie: just one of those movies where everything comes together -- the acting, the story, the direction, the special f/x -- everything was just top notch.

Shrek the Third.I really enjoyed the first two movies,so this one was really a disapointment.Not many fresh ideas,the jokes just werent very clever,and the story was pretty lame.A thumbs down for me on this one.

Once Upon a Time In The West (1968-69). Bronson, Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale (Whoo-Hoo-Dee-Do-Da!), and Jason Robards. Epic spaghetti by director Sergio Leone (same guy that did the Clint E. westerns). Rave reviews by pretty much every critic in the world. And why not. Sex, viloence, gun battles, murder, , horses, cool vintage trains, surreal music & plot, spectacular Arizona scenery, a real family film.

On most of the Shaolin Soccer DVD's there are two versions of the film-the one shown in US theaters,which is much shorter,dubbed,and even a scene or two moved around,Ive heard.And the original Hong Kong version.This one is much better-better action scenes,funnier.Be sure the dvd you get has the original version on it.

I saw Pirates 3 last night at the theatre.Very simple:If you liked the first two,and didnt mind the length,then youll enjoy 3.If not,then steer clear of this,since its really more of the same.

I saw an enchanting little film from Ireland today called Once.Its about a musician who plays on the street for cash,and an immigrant girl he meets whose also a musician.Wonderful songs,and it was really neat getting the feeling you are there during the creation of some really good music.And the story isnt at all the standard boy meets girl Hollywood flick,either.The rude people in the audience seemed disapointed that it wasnt predictable,but some of the scenes,espescially when the band they put together is cutting a demo are something special.
Knowing how much most AKers here love music,I have no problem at all recommending this terriffic little movie.

Went to the theatre Thursday with the whole family and saw POTC III, At World's End and liked it a lot. No, it's not Citizen Kane, but with me it suceeds on many levels as entertainment. I really like Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa and the monkey is OK too.

Also got "The Departed" on DVD from the library to give it a second watch at home and only made it through in bits and pieces; well, that happenes a lot when I watch it in bed.

At any rate, after watching "Goodfellas" the other day, I'm convinced that the awards for "The Departed" are all paybacks and makeups; "Goodfellas" totally kicks "The Departeds" ass in every direction. Hell, my wife even likes "Goodfellas" and that gangster, foul mouth, killing stuff is definitely not her cup of tea

How many scenes in ANY movie are as good as the extended scenes in Goodfellas where Ray Liotta is trying to explain everything thats happening with the crooks,the FBI,the babysitter,and with equal gravity,the state of the all important spaghetti sauce?In one sentence,we learn all we need to know about Rays state of mind.

Army of Shadows, great film!
Moody, Atmospheric, Hitchcockian suspense levels.
The Criterion DVD was flawless.

Shrek 3 -- more of the same, although those with a fondness for classic rock ("Immigrant Song") will find a few scenes enjoyable.

The Thirst (not the first one you find on IMDB, the one with Adam Baldwin) -- advertised as "Requiem for a Dream" meets "Near Dark" -- pretty accurate; there was a really good movie buried under there somewhere, but I think the movie-makers missed the mark on this one. I really liked the concept (analogy of drinking blood [vampires] to drug addiction).

The Descent -- excellent movie. I haven't seen this sort of atmosphere and patience in building suspense since the first Alien movie. A couple of minor quibbles, but ultimately a thumbs-up.

The Man with The Screaming Brain -- ultimately disappointing considering this is Bruce Campbell. I'm just not sure what they were going for. I enjoyed Bubba Ho-Tep, but this one just went over my head...or something...

I watched recently:

Hot Fuzz - Loved it, hilarious and semi violent.

Spider Man 3 - Enjoyable, but semi-disappointing. Too many plotlines and there was no reason to have MJ singing twice. Plus I don't like how they constantly make the villains 'see the light' at the end and we find out that they're all 'good guys'.

Catch and Release - I love jennifer garner, so i'm biased. But I thought it was enjoyable.

Recently watched most of the "Missouri Breaks" Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson, Not very impressed, draggy and slow, and little character development. Brando was being a 70’s weird Brando, and wasn’t anything like you would expect a hired “Regulator” to be. I stopped watching before it ended and SWMBO stopped even before that.

The Latest Movie was Ned Kelly. We had seen the last part before, and this time caught the whole thing. Ned Kelly was a late 1800’s Australian Outlaw, or Aussie/Irish rebel depending on your point of view.

Pretty good, all things considered. Not completely historically accurate (Per Wikipedia, I’ve gotten into the habit of looking up historical figures in the movies..), But it was an interesting look at what might have been going on, and certainly not all law officers back then were angels, (and probably not nowadays if it comes to that)

I’d recommend it. :thmbsp:

Its made by Judd Aptow,the same director/writer of The 40 Year Old Virgin,and its another home run.So much of the film is funny because its funny,and funny because its true.There are a few classic fall down laughing scenes,including one with Rogen and Rudd going to Vegas to see Cirque Du Soleil while on Mushrooms.
This is warm,honest,often mature,and very,very raunchy.Definetly not for the kids.

Smokin' Aces -- I enjoyed much of it, but it went off on too many tangents (the kid, Alicia Keys' character), and ended up ultimately tripping up as a result. I also didn't like the ending.

The last movie I watched was "The Brown Bunny" on Thursday. Despite being touted as having a real oral sex scene (which it does), this was the most pretentious, boring, waste of film stock you will ever see. Being in a coma is more interesting.

I was in a mood for Classics this weekend so I watched:

"Pigskin Parade", 1936 with a cast that includes Betty Grable, Jack Haley and Judy Garland (in her first film) Fun Musical about a small town football team invited to play Yale by mistake. Judys singing voice at 14 is incredible!


Next up was "The Sniper" 1952, an absolutely great B movie about a Serial Killer with Mother issues (eight years before Psycho!) I recorded this one off of TCM because it's not on DVD for some crazy reason.


After that it was "The Last Angry Man" from 1959, also from TCM
TV Producer wants to profile a reluctant Brooklyn Doctor but the Doc has too much integrity for Television.

Thanks to the San Jose public library the last movie I watched was Bee Season. Although not an outstanding movie, my wife and I gave it :thmbsp: :thmbsp:. A plus for those who live in the San Francisco Bay area, the setting is Oakland.

Synaesthesia -- meh. Not too bad. My friend with whom I watched asked about 1/3 of the way through if it was just him, or if the movie started off really good, then got real slow. I'm actually really glad he said that, because I hadn't noticed, and it allowed me to mentally pace myself more slowly, in line with the film. And there's a problem with lifelong synaesthetes, as they can't draw the sorts of analogies that were conveyed in the film -- that's only meant for us non-synaesthetes, in an attempt to help us understand. They didn't do as good job of conveying Synaesthesia, so much as romanticizing the concept.

Other than that, it was an okay film. I did enjoy the unraveling of the mystery part.

i just watched '1984' again...a 'gentle' reminder that there at least 25 cctv cameras on my street alone...and one per every 14 citizen in the UK...
if only the film was fictional instead of true...i'm nervously waiting for my neighbour to report me for my 'individual' thought crime of 'analog sounds better than digital' so i can be undergo 'newspeak' therapy...
as the movie says..two plus two sometime equals four..but then again it might equal 3 or 5..depending on who you answer to...or are afraid of :sigh:

I am currently watching the first season of The Unit on DVD. It is a good show if you watch it in long sittings and minus commercials.

Good movie. watched the other night. Last night I watched Lucky Sleven, with Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and lucy Lu. This movie has some neat twists in it.

Watched The Doors last night for the 2nd time after seeing it when it came out a few years ago. Lots of fun 60's music and scenes,

Loved the scene backstage before the Sullivan show appearance: "The television networks don't want you to use the word "higher" in "Light Your Fire" - can you dig what I'm saying?"

Been watching some of the Nancy Drew films from 1938-39, sounds silly but these are actually a lot of fun!

With you there. The movie had a stank about it that started right about the time Nicholas Cage showed up. The first 20 minutes were actually quite enjoyable & then it became Movie #2 sorta like the way "Stripes" devolved. (Of course, Peter Fonda played Peter Fonda which means; he pretty much phoned it in. Performance exception noted for Larry in "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry".) As Russell Crowe asked, "Are you not entertained?". Relative to "Ghostrider", unfortunately I was bored.

Watched "The Fifth Element (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fifth_Element)" again last night. A very under-rated movie, IMHO. Great fun.

over the weekend watched 'Harsh Times' with Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriquez-- nihilistic tale of Iraq vet Bale's return to civilian life and his dominant relationships with his Mexican fiance and his homey Freddy Rodriguez. they're a cupla good time homey dawgs knockin' their knuckles together and drivin' around east LA wasting time drinkin fawties and smokin' blunts, in the pretense of tryin to get jobs. eventually they do, but Bale gets crazier and crazier and eventually they bust some caps off in some peeps and shit gets real bad, dawg.

a few years ago, i would have admired this kind of dead end nihilism for its absolute commitment to withold redemption. but i now believe ya gotta pull something out of the cold fire or else, all you've got is a ninety minute diversion that almost is a story, but just doesn't quite get there. it was a first film for the director, bale executive produced, which may well mean he put his own $$ into it. good, harsh photography, great performances, and in particular by rodriguez, whom i love (anyone see Grindhouse?)....

You bet! Bale is not unlike Rutger Hauer IMO. When he is on, he is spectacular. When he isn't, he's decidely B-grade. However, that doesn't mean he can't be enjoyable as B-grade and he usually is. "The Prestige" was a very enjoyable film. (I was the most surprised with Jackman's performance. When he was playing as the double/down & out Shakespearean actor he was terrific.)

I need to see "The Machinist" as I have been told that Bale is both shocking and terrific in the role. So far, "American Psycho" is my fave w/ "Batman Begins" right behind. I don't think we've even seen his best work yet either.

Big thubs dow from me...where "The Prestige" tied in some insteresting history (Tesla v Edison) along with a fictional story it didn't rely completely on special effects to make its point...IMHO without FX, "The Illusionist" had no story...

Yes, this is pretty much where I come down on "The Illusionist". Norton was very good but the real surprise was Paul Giamatti. He's in nearly every scene and was the glue of the film. I thought he was great in "Sideways" but terrific in "The Illusionist". You could almost hear the gears creaking in his head as he reasoned it out.

"Das Boot", the full-full-full length original mini-series (4hrs, 52mins.)
Stunning. The 3-1/2hr version is beautiful in Superbit re-mastering and DTS sound, but the original just wears on you in all the right ways as the journey becomes more like a real-time experience.
There has never been a sub film with more realism or greater acting and directing. All the smaller parts are perfectly played along with Prochnow's captain.
If you have only seen "Hunt for Red October" and such, you are missing one great film.

Das Boot..definitely one of the great movies!!

Picked up the DVD documentary "Fly Jefferson Airplane" last weekend. Some good interviews, insights, etc. Some GREAT concert footage and old TV vids (cringe).

But they had footage Jean-Luc Goddard shot of the Airplane playing "House at Pooh Corners" on a hotel rooftop in Manhattan (a year before the Beatles did the same in London). An incredible performance. You could tell they were about to crash and burn.

Letters from Iwo Jima-As always, subtitles take a few minutes getting used to but thought it fairly decent.

Last King of Scotland-I believe Forrest Whitaker did a fantastic job portraying this loser of a so called "leader". The actor who portrayed the Dr. was too young to actually make his part believeable but still liked the movie.

• Rocky Balboa – It was one of the better Rocky movies. Slow to start, but ends up well.
• Borat – Kind of funny, but more stupid. It definitely had moments.
• The Marine – Surprising better than I thought it would be. The special effects were pretty lame though. Why use explosions that are obviously computer generated? It’s WWE Films so what would you expect.

The Comancheros, starring The Duke, corny as hell, but great fun.
In a few minutes will be plugging in The Searchers, also starring The Duke, one of the all time great westerns. DVD special edition. John Ford directed.

1408 was good supernatural thriller without too much of the predictable setups. Good build up to the suspense and a nice twist to the ending. Written by Stephen King.

The last one I watched was a newer French version of Robinson Carruso. It had had English subtitles, but after a while it was not as bothersome as I thought it would be. It was actually a good movie If you rent the DVD, remember it is a two parter. The first ends abrubtly, as Robinson dines on his first taste of human flesh and passes out. I thought that was the end until I fast forwarded and found the second part.

"Isolation".

One of the weirder, dumber B movie premises I've seen in a long time.

It should've been called ALIEN COW.

Genentic experiments to produce better cows gone wrong at an abandon dairy farm.

Woman genertic engineer gets her hand chomped by something with teeth while checking a pregnant cow. Next 25 minutes 2 guys trying to pull the thing out with a hand winch.

Of course they leave the mess until the morning by which time the alien cows thingy's come to life (looking a lot like the original aliens from Alien).

So the next hour is spent trying to catch these fast little suckers running amuck biting anbody that gets in their way.

The timid girl of the crew finally goes head to head with the one crazy engineer/scientist trying to save the critters and seems to save the day and destroys all the Alien Cows. Unfortunatley, everyone else doesn't make it.

4 months later cut to the pregnancy ward and an ultrasound -

... guess what?

At least a number of years, it was down in KC when I visiting my brother and sis-in-law and we went to the matinee showing of %#@! can't remember the title but was set during the Civil War and earned a best-supporting actress Oscar.
