It surprised me that it would be so funny. donoghue 06-29-2007, 11:40 PM Like in a theater? At least a number of years, it was down in KC when I visiting my brother and sis-in-law and we went to the matinee showing of %#@! can't remember the title but was set during the Civil War and earned a best-supporting actress Oscar. Any movie seen anywhere Bully. I'll bet you are talking about Cold Mountain. Saw Musa or "The Warrior" the other day. It is a Korean film from 2001 set in 14th century China. The action scenes alone make it worthwhile, some excellent characters too. JBL 4645 06-30-2007, 03:33 AM I have been buying movies I've never seen, but always wanted to. Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Wars was the talk at the early 1980’s just when home cinema sound was starting off. Both films where released in regular optical Dolby stereo A type and by the “Road Show” 70mm six-track Dolby stereo A “Baby Boom” type engagements at selected cinemas with dual 35/70mm. You really should get Close Encounters the mix discrete to the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo the opening is really cool with music starting up slowly and then the “Baby Boom” channel adds that extra low end extension. http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/47069/367877.jpg The opening has a nice (Baby Boom) slam that last for a few seconds, but what a Dolby stereo mix. http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/47069/367878.jpg There is no (Baby Boom) in this scene all the low end is covered from the matching three-screen channels. I just saw this comment again about Dreamgirls, and it made me think of a film about music I saw quite awhile ago that I really enjoyed. Its called "Grace Of My Heart".Its Illeana Douglas playing a version of Carole King, with Eric Stoltz playing a version of Goffin(dont remember his first name). Its really a what-if kinda movie. What if Goffin and King had written "Love Child"?What if Phil Spector(played by John Turturro)hadnt been a complete lunatic? What if Carole King ended up living with Brian Wilson(Matt Dillon)before she went on her own to create Tapestry? There is a serious feminist agenda here, but the portraits are fun to watch, and I bet Nickrobotron would get a kick out of the whole Brian Wilson episode, capturing both the genius, and the madness. Evidently, one cannot take most every favorite scene in a variety of films, set it to 460AD, and expect the result to be good. I think I finally gave up on the film when the movie tried to duplicate the Outlaw Josey Wales betrayal scene with mass fire arrow launchers in the covered wagons instead of Gatling guns. Those of you who were lukewarm about the first, this one will appeal more to you. Much of the original East European film character of the original is missing in this flick and the overall feel has been Hollywood-ized with more mainstream characters, less atmospheric, less of the bizarre and eclectic, less of the dark comedic aspects, and less grime -- environmental and human. It does possess a more mature plot structure and film elements compared to the first and makes it easier and more enjoyable to follow at times. Much that worked for the original is missing in this sequel. Unfortunately, the unusual incorporation of the subtitles in the original has been thrown away for an English dubbed audio track, which fails as those always do. So, if you want the experience, the preferred route is to go the Russian language track and make do with the generic subtitles at the bottom. The dark comedy aspects of the original film are also greatly toned down making for more of the generic action type movie that's a bit heavy on the melodrama. This film doesn't laugh at itself nearly so much as the original and could pass itself off as a generic Hollywood blockbuster were it not for a few absurdities making themselves known -- the Yo-Yo of the Apocalypse and a Ferris wheel serving duty as Godzilla, for a couple of instances. For the fans of the original, it is evident the people behind this sequel wanted to give the original cast the opportunity to reprise their earlier roles. Basically, it would appear that most everyone from the first managed screen time in the second and spotting them in the background adds to the experience. Watch it if you like the first or watch it if you didn't hate the first and feel like something different from the Cruise Clone popcorn flicks. Cheers, Snade Cosmic 12-10-2007, 06:26 PM Snade, 'Downfall' is amazing. I'm a WW2 buff, so I'm particular about who plays Hitler on-screen (as sick as it sounds.) You really get the impression Bruno Ganz knew his portrayal would be one for the ages. Very strong stuff about a period that, sadly, is being forgotten way too fast by many young people. This plus the director's cut of 'Das Boot' would make for a fine, looooong double bill of 'the German side of things' in WW2. C. The stupidest excuse for a movie I've ever seen. ta131js 12-15-2007, 11:47 AM In a movie theatre right? :scratch2: Lemme see -- I think it was 'Peggy Sue got married' or 'Amadeus' SpeakerLabFan 12-15-2007, 12:00 PM In a movie theatre right? :scratch2: Lemme see -- I think it was 'Peggy Sue got married' or 'Amadeus' LOL. Yeah, I'm averaging < 1 movie per year, and last year I begged out of a post Christmas eve dinner family get-together at a movie theatre downtown that was showing that pirate movie. There are a couple of movies that I would like to see while still in the theaters (hopefully they're still showing): Across the Universe; Into the Wild (and Downfall sounds like an interesting rental - thanks for the tip Snade :thmbsp: ) clydeselsor 12-15-2007, 12:39 PM National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation! Watched it on my computer last week. Pretty funny:lmao: arrow 68 12-15-2007, 03:39 PM Garp. Picked the DVD up the other night. Just as good as I remembered it. danj 12-17-2007, 02:09 AM HAIRSPRAY. Liked it a lot more than I thought I would. The music and dancing are well done and John Travolta in fat-suit drag is a real hoot. I give it an 8 out of 10. 2DualsNotEnough 12-17-2007, 04:12 AM Juno.Made by the same director who did Thank You For Smoking.Funny, smart, heartwarming, with really fine performances. When it goes into wide distribution,I predict this is gonna be a big hit. The last Movie I saw at a theater was one of the Rocky series. It was the one with out a number, just a name. Rocky. The last one I saw at home was A Christmas Carol with George C. Rod G-6000 12-28-2007, 08:28 AM Watched Pirates of the Caribbean "At Worlds End" Wasn't impressed by that one at all. pmsummer 12-28-2007, 09:01 AM "No Country For Old Men" Excellent film, though brutal. The Coen brothers haven't lightened up a bit. Yamaha B-2 12-28-2007, 10:12 AM 'Ratatouille' on DVD (Xmas gift for my 80+ year-old mother and aunt). Clever animated film. Makes me hungry to think about it. Good food......yum. slow_jazz 12-28-2007, 10:16 AM I just saw Sweeney Todd. Good movie but very bloody..... barrynsue 12-28-2007, 10:21 AM National Treasure-Book of Secrets. First movie seen in a theater in about for years. It was OK but nothing great. I prefer to watch movies at home. Can pause whenever I want, sound levels are adjusted to my taste, and the concession stand is much better! Barry fdrennen 12-28-2007, 12:33 PM "The Great Debaters." An inspirational movie great on Christmas! reggaenaut 12-29-2007, 04:35 PM SLC punk. Travails and confusion of teens. pmsummer 12-31-2007, 11:10 PM "Once" Worth seeing more than that. Jimmy Cosmic 01-01-2008, 03:27 PM 2Duals, :thmbsp::thmbsp::thmbsp: on "Charlie Wilson's War". Great ADULT film, in the real sense of the phrase. Sharp, intelligent writing, and it's both deadly serious and howlingly funny at the same time. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is amazing. Best, C. Danger Boy 01-01-2008, 03:51 PM August Rush... great movie.. without any violence or adult themes... good for the whole family. the music in this movie is great.. i won't give away any spoilers.. but it's a great movie. thisOne 01-01-2008, 03:51 PM Last three (all in one session): 1. "Notes on a Scandal" - Excellent performances by Judy Dench and Kate Blanchett 2. "Even Money" - which reconfirms that gambling is only good for the casinos 3. "Hairspray" - a mindless and enjoyable musical Eric H 01-01-2008, 04:17 PM Not as horrible as it sounds, entertaining actually in a cheesy way. :thmbsp: Widescreen DVD looks great too. reggaenaut 01-02-2008, 03:55 PM Mad Max. Horrible. Yamaha Nutz 01-02-2008, 03:58 PM Pirates of the Carribean 3 "'At Worlds End" Not Bad! Parnelly 01-05-2008, 10:44 AM Mad Max. Horrible. I just have to say that mad max is a great movie. Last three movies ive watched Last Night: Vanishing Point. Night Before: Cool Hand Luke Night Before That: Maximum Overdrive Many people may not agree that maximum is a good movie but its one of my fav's. Cool hand and Vanishing Point are both excellent movies. bigstereo 01-07-2008, 01:44 PM Resident Evil - Ex-stink-tion. Kinda sucked, just more of the same blowing away of a neverending stream of zombies with one twist, the Alice has been cloned, and carries within her DNA a cure for the virus. I have to watch it again just to make sure it sucks because I fell asleep several times during the movie. Fantastic 4, The rise of the Silver Surfer. Kinda dumb, they're just trying to milk this one for as much as they can get out of it. What's her name sure is cute though. Can't wait till Ironman comes out. The Simpsons Movie, eh.... Dale - The only authorized film about the life of the Intimidator. More of a documentary than a movie. Loved it. Lot's of race footage and his whole life was chronicled in clips and interviews with family, friends, Nascar folks, and fellow race car drivers. Loved it. Highly recommend anyone who was a fan of Earnhardt Sr to get over to WallyWorld and buy this 6 DVD commemorative box set for 20 bucks. Nice package Redboy 01-07-2008, 02:01 PM Balls of Fury! A terrible movie in the best kind of way. I loved it! Christopher Walken can make just about any movie great, but that guy from Reno 911 (who also directed) was awesome. markc2 01-07-2008, 05:29 PM The Orphanage. First 10 minutes to me were borerline, but after that. WOW!! ecandle 01-07-2008, 05:36 PM goonies Mystic 01-07-2008, 07:24 PM White Christmas w/ Rosemary, Vera, Danny & Bing. I liked Juno the best followed by Charley Wilson's War and then Atonement. I would recommend Charley Wilson's War and highly recommend Juno. Atonement was OK. My wife liked it better than I did. chewy 01-08-2008, 12:25 PM Animal House (the movie, not where I live!) hypertone 01-08-2008, 08:29 PM Watched Superbad and Knocked up recently. Superbad was better, but Knocked Up wasn't bad for a cheesy Hollywood movie. If you have a juvenile sense of humor as I do, you might like these... :) bigstereo 01-11-2008, 11:19 PM Diggers. Very good. :thmbsp: bigstereo 01-11-2008, 11:43 PM Gave Resident Evil Extinction another shot the other day. It's actually better than I said earlier. This time I stayed awake through it so the thing made made more sense. Looks like there'll be another one also judging from the way this one ended. tcdriver 01-12-2008, 11:22 AM Reality by David Bowie, This short film can be found on the Reality DualDisc, ISO/Columbia CN 90743. Eric H 01-13-2008, 01:29 AM I just returned from Hollywood where I saw this at the Arclight Cinema on Sunset. They had a special showing where it's only 21 or over and drinking is allowed in the theater (from their bar of course.) Seating is assigned, ushers are present and the audience was well behaved, all for only a few dollars more than a regular theater. :thmbsp: The movie was great, a little slow to get going but dark in the extreme, Tim Burton didn't hold back on the gore at all, throats are slashed and blood flows in rivers, this is one of the few movies I've seen that actually shocked the audience. All the actors were top notch, the music was only so-so but there were some songs that were pretty good. Recommended if you don't mind the gore and violence. :thmbsp::thmbsp: Danger Boy 01-13-2008, 01:44 AM Once it was pretty good, but at the end it kept me wanting more.. so i felt jipped on that level. tcdriver 01-13-2008, 10:02 AM There Will Be Blood. I will say that the movie seems a little unusual. That being said, I highly recommend it. :thmbsp: reggaenaut 01-13-2008, 12:13 PM The Longest Day. Great movie. I would have loved to see it in color. saltwater 01-13-2008, 01:33 PM im waiting on saw 4! i love thm movies and cant wait! WhiteSE 01-13-2008, 02:35 PM Alvin and the Chipmunks....because of Jr...lol mwr885 01-13-2008, 09:15 PM I just saw last nite I Am Legend...pretty good premise, but it still falls to the typical steretypical bad virus movie.... I think they could have taken this kind of movie into a different more introspective view of the other side of the coin......oh well, its well worth seeing anyway... I recently saw this movie, I agree it was pretty typical of the virus/zombie movies that have been coming out a lot lately but had the potential for so much more. Also a new ending is in order kinda felt like there was more story that got glossed over. But still a very decent movie! :thmbsp: bordeno 01-15-2008, 07:13 AM St. Elmo's Fire Picked up at GW yesterday for $1.50 Forgot how much I enjoyed this movie. Really brought me back to the '80s. Reminded me how fortunate I am to have escaped that decade with half a brain. "My face seats five." favorite of many great lines in that movie. cfranz 01-15-2008, 08:11 AM Mr. Roberts - I'll stick with the old movies, back when there was character and plot. Oh yes, and the characters had character. Andyman 01-15-2008, 08:46 PM "The Bourne Ultimatum" Good action flick, but this one seemed a bit more action and less plot and character, not that the others were brimming with it. OvenMaster 01-17-2008, 10:15 PM I just finished "Cars". I have never laughed so hard at a Disney flick in my entire life. Being a car nut, the constant in-jokes are a riot... and there's simply no way you can spot all of them the first time around. Tom Filmboydoug 01-17-2008, 11:16 PM In The Name Of The King. It sucked. donoghue 01-20-2008, 09:10 PM The Player-Altman movie from '92, first time I've seen it, very good imo, stylized and "of its time" The Crying Game, 2nd viewing, very unique film, so strange it feels like it's based on a true story, I like it a lot Explorers, kids movie from 80s, one of my favorites back then, it's good until they actually make it into space Bringing out the Dead, Scorcese, underrated, love the performances, love the music, driving/musical sequences are real art 2DualsNotEnough 01-20-2008, 09:34 PM Just watched a dvd a friend lent me-"Brain Donors" with John Turturro. Its a comedy from the early 90's that was a Marx Brothers redo.John gets to play the groucho part.I dont think its entirely succsessful, but there are so many great gags, and terriffic lines. The guys are getting ready to watch an opera, and John tells the usherette,"Miss, these seats are terrible!Theyre facing the stage!"Someone asks John if he is who he is,and John says,"Do I owe you money?"No"."In a drunken stupor did I promise to marry you?""No"."Then Im your man!" A real sleeper,IMHO. Jimmy Danger Boy 01-21-2008, 01:46 AM went to the mega plex today to see Juno. Cute movie.. witty lead young female actress. good writing.. and she pulls it off very well. mikkelbreile 01-21-2008, 06:13 AM I recently saw this movie, I agree it was pretty typical of the virus/zombie movies that have been coming out a lot lately but had the potential for so much more. Also a new ending is in order kinda felt like there was more story that got glossed over. But still a very decent movie! :thmbsp: No there hardly was a plot point not used. Will Smiths film is based on the 1971 The Omega Man movie starring Charlton Heston in the role of the military professor. Actually both are adapted from the 1964 horror movie, The Last Man On Earth, starring legendary Vincent Price. I suggest for a evening in good company you see the 1964 Vincent Price film first, then the 1971 Charlton Heston, and end with the 2007 Will Smith version. Would be bad to compare them but if you must, th 1964 film is on its own, the others are science fiction movies rather than horror movies. Will is good, better than I have seen him before. Charlton is very good, equals his performance in Planets of The Apes. Whcih is another film that has deep roots. Vincent I never saw before, but I think everyone has heard his laughter, his metie was horrow movies and the laugh on the MJ tune Thriller is his. Mikkel bigstereo 01-23-2008, 04:04 AM Charlie Wilsons War. Loved it. Bourne Ultimatum. It was okay. Oceans Thirteen. More of the same, very hard to follow details. Saw IV. Oh there will be blood, and plenty of it. This one may very well be the best of the series, and I think there will be another. "The game is just beginning". onepixel 01-23-2008, 02:35 PM Smokin' Aces Lots of stars, lots of guns, lots of action, lots of subplots, lots of fun. bordeno 01-23-2008, 02:44 PM Casino Royale, got for Xmas, finally around to seeing it.
