Outstanding movie. Gripping, intense and very real. Liam Neeson is much more "natural" than Jason Bourne or James Bond. Famke Janssen adds a soft touch.

Highly recommended.

'Cloverfield'. Great monster movie.
'The Forbidden Planet.' It's a bit stilted by today's standards but to a 7 year old in the 1950's it was bloody terrifying.

I guess the question remains, "what is there to cry about?" I do not cry at movies. It is a movie after all, and usually based on a fictional story.

Bourne Ultimatum - I haven't seen Taken, so I can't respond to Mayam's observation, but Bourne Ultimatum has that awesome fight scene (with Desh in Tangier). And that scene on the roof of the parking structure in Manhattan. I just love how Damon/Bourne goes into an almost machine-like trance when he's in action. Blocks out everything but what it takes to survive.

Whether it's realistic or natural or not I can't say as I don't inhabit a world in CIA assassins. My life is much more mundane. Still, I love the Bourne trilogy.

Interesting observation. You seem to have a very Aristotelian (or is it Platonic or Socratic - I forget, but it's one of the Big Greek 3) viewpoint: that fiction (drama, I believe was the original) is all just a lie.

I think people all demonstrate different levels of ability or willingness or whatever you want to call it when it comes to suspending your disbelief. Who knows what gets in the way. I guess it varies based on the movie. For me, one of the things that ruined Alexander (to take one) was how much trouble I had seeing past Colin Farrell's blonde hair (as a Greek???).

Then, what ruins the Star Wars prequel trilogy is just the leaden dialog and totally contrived plot. Mr. Lucas painted himself into too many corners and just couldn't get out of them.

But there are other movies that just draw me in, for whatever reason. Run, Fat Boy, Run, is a great example. Something about the characters and the story.... and I think those two elements can overcome a lot of bad things elsewhere.

So, I guess if the fact that a work is based on a work of fiction prevents you from getting emotionally involved in the story is, to me, unfortunate.

But, as the French say, Vive la difference!!!

Age may be a factor as well. I don't know the respective ages of you folks, but I find as I get older and have had so many more experiences in life, that my empathy is more easily aroused by a movie or TV show.

Sure, most of the time it is fiction, even though some of them are based on true stories, but most TV shows have some basis in truth for the story line. As we grow older, I think that most of us will feel empathy for characters in the shows or movies as a result of our own experiences.

A good example is that when I was younger, I could watch all sort of "blood and guts" in these shows and feel nothing. Now I see a character take a hard fall from a building or off a wall and for a second, I cringe. I believe that is because I know what pain from a fall feels like. I don't seem to feel the same cringe when someone is shot, probably because I have never been the recipient of a gunshot.

I believe the same "empathic cringe" goes on emotionally when we have experienced simular feelings to those in the shows or movies.

Then again, what do I know? :scratch2:

I can't say I agree with the Greeks. I think a lie is a deliberate attempt to deceive someone. I do not see fictional story attempting that. Maybe I am reading too much into it?

How is that unfortunate? I still enjoyed the story. Why does one have to be emotionally involved to enjoy the story of a movie? To answer 70salesguy's question, I am 46 years of age, and in a good portion of that time, I have shed enough tears at family funerals to last me for a long time.

I have seen "Taken" and Matt Damon is the MAN. For me nothing compares to the Bourne series. Bourne has those eyes and facial expressions which grab and hold you.

Denzel was not as polarizing as his role in "Training Day," nonetheless he manages to deliver quite a smooth yet crafty portrait of a earlier times gangster. Many stars are in this movie.

Excellent movie but definitely not for young children, it's very dark and scary, there is a Burlesque sequence that has to be seen to be believed.

We watched Watchmen last night.

It was certainly interesting. It runs close to 3 hours.

Visually interesting, it seems to me that they spent the first 2 hours to "set up" the story. The actress that played Silk Spectre II, Malin Akerman, wasn't too hard to watch. :no:

In one scene in Tank's apartment, you can see what appears to be a silver-faced receiver from the 70s.

Surprised my girlfriend with "Cape Fear" this past Friday night. She thought it was a nice movie. Nick & Robert are quite the pair in this movie.

A lot of action & tension is a major signature draw for this one.

500 Days of Summer. It's hot in Vancouver so we went to a movie this afternoon. Good film, we both came out happy with our choice.

Iv been rewatching all the Clint Eastwood westerns they are wicked good .My favorite so far is The Good the Bad and the Ugly followed by Two Mules for Sister Sarah

I saw it for the second time last night. It's a decent movie, typical Coen brothers flick (i.e. it gets better every subsequent time you see it). Hated Big Lebowski and Fargo the first times, but they've become favorites.

Funny People,made by Judd Apatow,same guy who did 40 Year Old Virgin,and Knocked Up.I just couldnt get into it at all.It was almost 2 and a half hours long,and I had a hard time warming up to any of the characters.My wife absolutely hated it.

I have avoided this movie for years because I have never found Val Kilmer to be a quality actor.

In this movie, I must admit he did very well. It may be that he only had to fake being stoned, fake sex and fake rock'n'roll that ade it easy (if he's sings in the shower I am going to guess he has enough experience that it ALL was easy to do).

Really, though, it was very well done, and I enjoyed it immensely.

There is a part of me that had a problem with Kyle MacLachlan as ray Manzarek, but it was only when he talked...Twin Peaks flashbacks.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. The DTI soundtrack version, not the Dolby Digital version. Awesome sound!!! Especially when you crank it up to movie theater listening levels.

The quiet sounds are impressive. The sounds of men moving around inside a tiny, 200-foot long wooden warship, and the blasts and explosions of early nineteenth century ship-to-ship warfare.

The books are quite good too. Have completed the first four of the 21 books. Okay, 20 and a half books.

I watched SNATCH for about the 3rd time last night , excellent flick , Brad Pitt is hilarious as a piker barenuckled boxer . I never realized this was a Guy Richie film .

To me, this is essential Tarantino. He takes everything you love about asian martial arts films, Japanese Anime, and even dashes a bit of Western on top and serves it to you on a blood-spattered, platinum platter. It's probably my most favorite ridiculously violent movie since Sonny Chiba's Street Fighter series and the new Rambo. Sit back, crack a beer, and enjoy the carnage. In addition, Uma Thurman is super hot in that motorcycle outfit! (Great tribute to Bruce Lee, BTW) :thmbsp::thmbsp::thmbsp::thmbsp::banana:

Vanishing Point, barry newman, cleavon little, 1971? Watched it last night and fell asleep to it. That shows how tired i was, i fell asleep to a movie thats a 2 hour car chase.

Quo Vadis, on Blu Ray. I was too young to see it at the movies, saw it on TV a few times, but standard definition could not do it justice.

Amazing how much detail. I wondered how they got the effect of motion in the crowds on the matte paintings without computer graphics. They explained it in the accompanying documentary - the artist picked off small areas of paint and moved a patterned sheet behind the matte.

Call Northside 777 from 1948 with Jimmy Stewart. It was fun to see the outdoor scenes shot on location in Chicago.

Hugo, enjoyable, interesting mix of fantasy and fact involving early Cinema.
Shot in 3D but I watched it in 2D.

Eating Raoul (1981) Paul Bartel, Mary Woronov black comedy.

I tried to watch Eraserhead today. I got about 30 minutes into it and.. i was so lost i just turned it off. Supposedly a classic but.. it was just irritating and confusing to me.

I just got the VHS tape and the CAR CHASE is even better in ANALOGUE than it is watching it online!! (No surprise there) -- The sound is richer and just more pleasant....

Another good car chase was in "Fear Is The Key," but I don't think it's been officially released on DVD in the U.S., and I'm leery of buying "bootlegs." The big chase scene was filmed all over S.E. Louisiana and the Miss. Gulf Coast.

saw To Sir; With Love over the weekend. Reel13 the NY PBS station runs a classic each Sat. night with info from a qualified film buff. I wonder since PBS syndicates stuff like other stations, do any of you guys get reel 13 from WNET in NY over your local pbs stations?

I love car chase stuff too, Vanishing Point is one of my fav's but for car chases although gone in 60 seconds is really good, my top car chase stuff has always been The Rockford Files, and Smokey and the Bandit. Mostly because after a good chase, they each ducked down some street, driveway, etc and watched as they got passes by by their chaser. Also I really love the get away from the bank robbery at the beginning of The Transporter, It had great sound track for the chase, and the fight scene after the Transporters car got blown up. Check it out dudes...

It is a color movie although the final segment is so stark and snowy there's not much color to see.
