A hauntingly good love story (with a twist that'll leave you guessing) that really communicates how loving someone can tear out your heart and make you crazy! Connolly is a true beauty.

Other Men's Women, a 1931 Pre-Code movie about a man who falls in love with his best friend wife.

This was a really good film with some interesting camera work, lots of location shots of vintage Steam Locomotives and a style that seemed much more realistic than most films of the era. :thmbsp::thmbsp::thmbsp:

Low budget CBC film starring Julie Christie as a Canadian with Alzheimer's, and dealing with the impact her illness has on her husband. Having lost my mother to the disease, and seeing my wife's mother going down that path (albeit at an older age), I had/have mixed feelings about the film.

The Lair of the White Worm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lair_of_the_White_Worm_(film)), on TV. I didn't know anything about this movie. I thought it was one of those class B cheap horror movies (which I enjoy!) but something was different: first of all, a youg Hugh Grant was acting and the film was very heavily charged, gothic, with some sexual connotations. I googled it and found that it is a Ken Russel film (first surprise) and that it is based on Bram Stocker last novel (second surprise)! Not for everybody's tastes but certainly a film that got me out of the usual boring film style on TV!

Escape from New York. 1981, takes place in 1997. The s**t acting was fascinating. So bad in so many ways. All the graffiti on the walls in and on all the buildings was written in the same handwriting and read "help" and "I Love New York" and other childish junk. NEVER watch this movie. But if you want to, it's currently in On Demand's free movies section.

This is a true story about the guy who founded and owned Elle fashion magazine. Later on in his life he had a stroke that basically left him a vegetable. He learned to communicate with people by blinking one of his eyes. By doing this he wrote an award winning novel. This movie was based on his life after he had the stroke. This was truly a great movie that I would recommend to anyone. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

Until I saw this one. Ham-handed direction, random editing and unconvincing stage performances (except for Trini Alvorado's drumming; if she doesn't really play, she sure can fake the shit out of it!) made this a really long hour and a half.

JimmyDW does seem to be a bit behind the curve. Technically, they are great but could a bit of work on their ideas. Pixar had "A Bug's life", DW had "Antz", a sorry imitation. ...and the beat goes on.

Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner. Watched Tombstone a few weeks ago and always like watching the two pretty close together, love 'em both.

Barry Lyndon, loved it at times but the ending was blah and I didn't appreciate the voice over telling me what was about to happen all the time.

Just finished watching Carnegie Hall. Not much of a plot, mostly an excuse to show case some of the best talent in the world. Featured appearances by Rise Stevens, Lily Pons, Gregor Piatigorsky, Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Reiner, Artur Rubenstein, leopold Stokowski, Harry James and many others.

It's worth watching just to see Piatigorsky and Heifetz.

This is a total spoof on War Profiteering. Some of the laughs require you to have a working knowledge of the goings on of companies like Haliburton. The main company entity in the movie is a company called Tamerlane. I'd have to say it's kind of a smart comedy, but at points is almost ridiculous, but in a way isn't a company like Haliburton ridiculous? I'll give it a :thmbsp::thmbsp::thmbsp::thumbsdn::thumbsdn:

Totally blown away with the suckiness of this one.

It has so little in common with the original that they might as well have changed the title to "Keanu Phones In Another One". The original was a subtle morality play with tinges of sci-fi while this one was a SFX orgy that bludgeons you to death with green issues.

I watched Serenity (2005) which was a sequel to the Fox sci fi series Firefly. It was kind of a fun sci fi romp with space battles and marauding cannibalistic berzerkers. And Summer Glau was in it. :drool: I've had a crush on her since seeing her as a Terminator in the Sarah Conner Chronicles (if I were to die by machine, I'd want it to be her). I'd give Serenity a thumbs up if you don't expect high brow cinema.

Recently watched "The Queen" with Helen Mirren who won best actress for it. I thought it was a very good film that helped me put the Princess Diana aftermath in perspective. Of course I am mildly in love with Ms Mirren despite her being twice my age so my opinion is skewed in her favor.

Just finished watching A Fistful of Dollars, starring the one and only Clint Eastwood. If you think westerns are all old and stodgy, this movie will change your opinion. I thought westerns were bad/tacky before I watched this on the recommendation of my friend, and it was very good. Great plot, and lots of action. Sergei Leone is an excellent director. :thmbsp:

Cruise was the one thing I didn't like about WotW. There were many scenes (the burning, runaway train, for example) that were straight from the book. Very impressive.

I allowed this film to pass me by over and over again. I knew nothing about the it beyond the fact that two teens are somehow transported into the B&W world of a "Leave It To Beaver" type 1950's comedy...and that Don Knotts had a small role`. I expected a moderately entertaining "fish out of water" comedy. I did NOT expect a razor-sharp commentary on social mores, intolerance, bigotry and a vain struggle to maintain a status quo. I don't think I've been as pleasantly (no pun intended, honest) surprised as I was with this film. I told my wife that this film should be shown to all sociology students. The message is very strong, yet is so incredibly deftly handled that I never felt that I was being preached to. And for once in a LONG time, the script was very well done. Every word uttered by every cast member was completely believable.
5 stars. Highly recommended.

J.J. Abrams knocked one out of the park with his take on Star Trek. We saw it this afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Saw it yesterday. Very impressive, very entertaining, but flawed by a poor screenplay/story. Too many scenes of Kirk clinging to the edge of an overhang, and good sci-fi writing doesn't have to use the "time-traveler" escape as a plot device.

One too many shots of Kirk laying on the ground trying to shake off a punch to the head, as well. I think the time travel, multiple universe plot device was used to allow differences in the story from the TV series history. It creates an opportunity for new movies that don't hew to the first series and movies - a true reboot.

I highly recommend the documentary "Man on Wire" about the guy who starts planning an illegal tightrope walk between the World Trade Center's twin towers even before they're built and pulls it off. Great film.

Sounds like a good movie if you pretend its not a Star Trek movie

"The White Diamond"; a documentary by Werner Herzog.

Wonderful and dreamlike; typically spellbinding fare from Herzog about a scientist trying to perfect a two-man airship and testing it over the Amazon jungle (and a dark secret as part of his efforts.)

Only in Herzog's films will you see scenes like this one: a local Rastafarian sitting smoking in a see-through inflatable chair in the clearing in the jungle where they are prepping the airship, talking about how beautiful the ship is (hence the name he gives it.)

I don't think it would have garnered the same rave ratings if it were about someone from the slums of Detroit, Philly or the South Bronx..

I DVRed it, thinking it was the mid 70s movie about the monster baby (that was what the description on the cable guide said). I love B-grade horror movies and hadn't seen that one.

Well, I still haven't seen it because this was a 1969 movie with the same title about a man who keeps a reptilian monster in a cave. It was made by a director who is apparently infamous for making incredibly shitty movies. This was no exception. Not B-grade, not C-grade but Z-grade.
Might've been the worst movie I've ever watched. Definitely in the worst three or four.

QoS, I kept waiting for the film to start. With the exception of a great car chase in the beginning, I can recall almost nothing about it.

Taken gets filed under "Who doesn't like Liam Neeson?". Went & saw it with my son. Completely predictable, completely didn't care. It was fun to watch.

We watch movies for entertainment. Both were very entertaining.

Benjamin Button was well done, I thought. Good job of making him get younger and later of making Daisy grow older.

I am a big fan of the original TDTESS, so I made a strong effort not to comapre the two. Taken on its own merits, I enjoyed it! Jennifer Connelly is always nice to see and it held my attention well.

I guess that's part of the reason why it garnered so much praise, and that's sad in many ways. Slums and shanty towns like that exist in many places around the world, Rio, Mexico City, and I'm sure in China, Asia, and Africa. Remember years ago when there were those vigilante death squads in the slums of Rio hunting down the herds of wild children who were attacking and in some cases killing tourists?

Hopefully films like this will open some folks eyes to how well off we really are here and help people realize that every child doesn't have his own room with a cell phone and PS3? It's amazing how insulated we can be from the realities of other cultures and countries even with all the cable channels ramming visuals down our throats daily. :yes:

Just got back from Drag Me to Hell. Dang movie makes you jump from start to finish. Had too much gross-out, which really wasn't necessary. Scary and disgusting aren't mutual. But it had lots of "gotcha!" moments, and used the sense of sound extremely well to create tension. I despise most horror movies (usually because they're just gross instead of scary), but I enjoyed this one immensely.

Blockbuster saleskid kept bugging me to rent "Taken" DVD, so I looked it over and decided to give it a spin. WOW awesome action flick, that saleskid really does know which movies to rent :thmbsp:

Just watched Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" last night.

What an exceptional movie, I really love Gilliam's work, and this is probably the best of anything I've seen by him. I am very surprised I had never seen it, or matter of fact even really heard about it before, but my good friend and fellow movie buff made me watch it with her last night, and I am still in shock of its greatness! If you haven't seen it make sure you see The "Criterion Collection" version that has Gilliam's cut of the movie (studio released it differently to make it "less depressing").

Last movie I saw in the theatre was Terminator 4. It was a huge disappointment. I agree with the previous post that Brazil is a very good movie, I have it recorded on DVR right now. I think I'll watch it in a little bit.

Not sure what put me on this kick but it was a thoroughly enjoyable run. Had not seen Conspiracy Theory in years. It has some major plot problems but I really enjoyed it this time around. It is a hoot as Gibson is unhinged.

We watched Easy Virtue yesterday afternoon. Recommended.

Went to watch it today. It really touched upon my greatest fear of all- growing old. Some parts made me teary eyed. :tears: But damn that movie was brilliant. And the dogs cracked me up. Leaps and bounds better than Wall-E or Ratatouille, both of which which I thought kinda sucked.

The same here. It's not bad the 2nd time around. Once had the first 6 Star Trek movies on laserdisc.

Since starting Netflix a month ago, have done more viewing than in the past. The last movie was Bobbie Jones,Stroke of Genius. I am not a golfer,but I actually enjoyed this one.

They're on Blu Ray now and that's how I watched this one, it looked and sounded fantastic which probably helped with the enjoyment factor, I think I saw it at the Drive In in 79 and VHS after that. :D

Anything directed by Robert Wise can't be all bad.

After scanning through what seemed like 10,000 channels of garbage, I grabbed a VHS full of movies taped off TCM and my wife and I enjoyed 12 Angry Men. This was her first time (she loved it); I guess its about the 6th or 7th time I've watched it. I think I'll go run Anatomy Of A Murder now.

UP in 3D. Pixar does it again. Excellent.

I liked this one too. Russell Brand, (the rockstar), was hilarious.

The last movie I watched was The Hunting Party with Richard Gere and Terrence Howard. It's about some journalist who go back to Sarajevo for the 5th anniversary of the end of the war. They end up trying to catch a wanted war criminal. Really good film, IMO.

Gran Torino. Great movie! Not exactly an edge of your seat action thriller, but a great movie nonetheless.:thmbsp:

I also liked Sarah Marshall. Kind of started slowly but really turned funny...

Planet Terror was, to me, strongly reminiscent of Peter Jackson's splatstick horror-comedy Brain Dead (aka Dead Alive) in that no matter how grotesque and gory the imagery was, there was a strong undercurrent of comedy to the storyline. I mean come ON! A woman loses her leg and gets a high-powered machine gun as a replacement prosthesis? Geez! I liked it, too. Death Proof sucked, though.

I just saw Gran Torino at home Friday night and agree it was amazing. Classic Eastwood but in a way also reflective of his age.. I wonder if the ending has some deeper meaning for him?? (I dont want to spoil it if others have not seen it.)

Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan.

Funny when this came out it was considered to be much better than the 1979 film, but I actually enjoyed ST The Motion Picture more this time around.

The first one is more influenced by Kubrick, this is more influenced by Lucas, maybe I enjoyed it less because I've seen it so many times already and not so much the first one. :scratch2:

Next up is ST III, I barely remember it at all so it'll be interesting to see what I think of it now.

The Boss (wife) brought a copy of "New in Town" with Renee' Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr. home. So first thought was; great gadz another chick flick to have to endure. :boring: I'm glad I sat and watched the whole thing...it was good! As the movie supposedly takes place in small town MinneSNOWta I probably understood it's humour better.

The Great Raid about the 1945 rescue mission of the last surviving pows from the Bataan death march, I was completely satisfied by the film with the exception of one too many guest actor appearances by Captain Dale Dye the movie soldier training guy. I love him but he takes me out of the movie. The documentary on disc two "The Ghosts of Bataan" is must see material.
