whats the deal with the big power tranny off in one of the speaker bays? powr for stereo? nver seen that before.

I'm sure that is the power supply chassis for the amp/radio tuner.

If that stereo is tube and not solid state, I may be able to convince a friend of mine to go pick it up-but I would need to be certain about the stereo first.....he's been looking for a coffin-like stereo for a while, but it has to be tube only.

That stereo will be solid state. I think RCA's stereo console line went SS in '65.
