Day of the Triffids is an excellent book. The Howard Keel movie is decent, but you are right, it doesn't follow the book too closely. Simon Clarke wrote a sequel called Night of the Triffids that isn't too bad. Wyndham also wrote The Midwich Cuckoos, which was made into the movie The Village of the Damned, about alien children implanted in human women, apparently as a sort of fifth column.

"Waterworld" would've been a much better movie if they'dve hired an editor. Brutal cutting would've taken out about 45 minutes of worthless crap and made it work a lot better. Must agree with those who mentioned "Silent Running". It should be required viewing from about middle school on.

Living in a totalitarian state where there is no oil, Majors, a former racecar driver, takes his car across country to California, a free state. He stops and siphons the dregs out of old gas station tanks to make it. I recall it being really hokey but entertaining.

For another hokey but fun romp through a post apocalyptic world, how about Judge Dredd?

And I guess technically, The Matrix trilogy was post apocalyptic too.

IIRC, it was the Arab States placed an embargo on the U.S. and West. I remember Lee Majors making a point where perhaps the "Arabs are tired of driving 30 year old Cadillacs." I'd place the movie in the 2005-2010 timeframe.

Let's see, I like "Dr. Strangelove" and "Failsafe." The latter actually avoided the apocalypse but it could have happened.

"Threads" was really scary, the British film from 1984 that went from just before World War III to 13 years later. Another British one, "The War Game," was made in 1965 but it was banned for a while, I have a copy of it somewhere.

"No Blade of Grass," another British one, 1971, where grass type crops like grains and so forth get a plague in Europe and there is food shortages. Some people did make it to the U.S. that was unaffected but the film focused on the survivors left behind.

I would have been happier if they'd left the footage in but tightened the story up.....a but. There was as much right as wrong with it I surely agree.

Wyndham moved to the top of my list of SF authors I want to read more of. I will have to track down the Clarke book. The reviews are mixed between hatred & rapture so it should be interesting.

Watched Doomsday last night. Story line was not too bad and I had reasonable expectation considering both Bob Hoskins & Malcolm McDowell were in it, albeit in supporting roles. Unfortunately it was filmed in Super-Extra-Splat-&-Gore-O-Rama and the story went to the back of the bus real quick. I'd say gratuitous in execution but that doesn't quite go far enough. About 25% of the film is devoted to dismemberment, incineration, decapitation, heads being blown apart, hands severed, bodies run over & squashed, well, you get the idea.
