What year is this Motorola TV?

Greetings all,

New member here and glad I found the site. I have a Motorola I picked up a few years back and curious as to what year its from. Ive had no luck thru the searching Ive done online and figured it would be an easy one for some one here. Its b&w and carries model #Y23K60M and serial #D492140. I bought it with the crt having previously been removed. Im doing a renovation of a 1956 ranch home and my plan is to furnish it from the period.

I know most here probably wouldnt like to hear this but I would like to use the old cabinet and install a color chassis from a newer color crt set. I figure it would be a pretty straight forward job but any advice/tips from anyone who has done this would be appreciated.

One question I do have in doing this is exactly what size newer set to look for? I assume the "23" in the model # of the Motorola refers to it being a 23" set. The actual viewable diagonal measurement inside the frame is 22.5". Do the newer crt sets differ in any way compared to the old ones as to size or should I just look for any 23" model to use in the Motorola cabinet?

You'd have to look for a 22", 227 sq" CRT color set, using a 22JP22 or a 21V**P22.
I don't know when most companies quit making them, as they're not that common.
IIRC, RCA made a XL100 table model, that used a 22" CRT.
Judging from the Sams folder number, it's a 61 to 64 model set.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if it could be a '64 model judging by the "D4" in the serial # designating April 1964. But Im probably mistaken.

Please educate me as to why a 22" CRT set would be the correct fit for the old cabinet. Is it because the newer crt's were sized larger for its given designation?

Is using a 1" smaller new color crt the guideline that would be used for this type of modification regardless of the original sets size? As an example I also have a 1959 Zenith, model #D2458, using the Super 20 Hi-Fi chassis. The actual viewable diagonal measurement is just under 20". If someone wanted to do the same replacement on this set would a 19" or 20" newer unit be the correct fit? Would using total sq" be a better guideline?

The Sams is from a #615 folder, which the Sams index designates a '63 publish date. The set is probably a 1962 model year. It's a TS570, which is a higher end model, that year.
I don't know if anyone can come up with the dimensions of the original B/W CRT, to compare with the 21V or the 22J color CRT's.
BTW, the original CRT used in that set is a 23AHP4.

One issue with such a conversion is that ANY color CRT will have a different curvature to the face than the original tube and will thus not but up against the mask uniformly along the mask's perimeter leaving ugly gaps (a similar issue occurs with flat screens only to a worse extent). Another issue is getting different sets of CRT mounting hardware that were never intended to be used together to fit together properly.

The dreaded 23EGP22 would be the best bet, right? But good luck finding one that is still good.

rca,magnavox and sylvania offered 22 inch screens.rare birds and extremely hard to find.

If you are talking 22JP22 based sets Zenith also offered some...I have one from the late 60's.
