When I first got the TV I had to turn the red guns up because the picture was green tinted so who knows maybe the red gun is going weak

Ok. For the time being I got some test patterns run on it, and calibrated tint and color controls.

Meh, maybe I'm just looking too far into it because of the flyback problems. I'm probably looking for flaws when I should just be enjoying it.

You will never see bleed with an ntsc generator, you need a simple color bar generator to see the offset. Also you can't set the tint with your generator and expect it to be consistent with all your sources because the burst frequency will never be exactly the same between sources.

Have you tried a different cable between your source and the set?
I used to service rental TV systems... I could tell some tales there, but I digress... The customers would kink the cables often just to have the company send us out... Or, rip the cable end connector off, and scream at the company until I came out, and often demand a reduction on the rent for the week, etc.... The picture on your set looks pretty good for a set of this vintage. |

I don't want to take apart the TV right now so I'll try and attenuate it externally. The TV also has 300 ohm screws, could I just use one of those adapters, 75 ohms to 300 ohms to attenuate the signal, since they would have slightly signal loss?
EDIT: Actually, on the Hitachi, there's some ringing too: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...n/IMG_0226.jpg But it doesn't bleed it's colors unless the contrast is cranked up, cause IT does have a weak CRT. Some sets were imperfect when they left the factory, probably more true of a once low end brand like Samsung.
This set seems to be performing pretty well actually, I think you might be chasing problems that there is no solution for. Possibly a complete alignment of the video and chroma circuits might help but that's going to require the services of someone with the knowledge and equipment to do it. |

Looks to me like crappy luminance channel / delay line design combined with narrow-band smeary chroma. Could be something actually wrong around the delay line, but probably they were all like this. Fiddling with chroma alignment *might* reduce the chroma smear somewhat also, but I wouldn't bet on it.
