I would love to see a picture of the color wheel installed in the AB set. It would probably be OK to watch in a very dark room. 90% of the CRT brightness gets lost coming through the spinning wheel.

Unfortunately Clifff, I did not take a photo of the color wheel. It was definately a custom affair. From what I remember, it was made from 2 nicely machined circular aluminum plates. The color wheel was evidently in between the 2 aluminum plates and on the back side of one of the plates the motor was mounted. I can remeber what type of motor it was (induction or ac/dc brush type) but it was painted black and was about 3 inches in diameter. There was a "window" machined into the plates where the image from the protellgram was intended to shine through the spinning wheel. Now that I have one of these sets of my own, I can see how the color adapter probably just sat inside the set on top of the cover panel that sits above the chassis components in the cabinet. All you would have to do is position the window in the aluminum plates above the opening in the pannel where the protelgram shines through. The electronics was a standard Colortel chassis. I saw the chassis and the guy actually had the original Colortel literature that came with the Colortel unit. Sorry I don't have a photo, but if I should have an inclination, perhaps I could go and take a camera shot of it. But I would not hold my breath because this guy is a real nut job, and probably would not allow a photo.

But I would bet you could easily make one of these with your skills. The concept is very elegant and I would bet you could adapt a color wheel like this to any set that used a protelgram projector unit. The interesting part about this concept is that the image comming out of the protelgram is not very large when you are close to the protelgram projector lens and you can keep the color wheel rather small at that point. AFter the image passes through the color wheel the image expands until it is projected onto the reflector mirror and then to the back of the viewing screen.

It would be an interesting project but I don't have any expertise in color wheels. I recall there was a protelgram projector set that went rather cheeply at last years ETF acution. You are so good with this stuff Cliff, you should get your hands on a protelgram set and embark on this project. It would be a neet "show and tell" demonstration for one of the ETF conventions.
