Slumdog Millionaire

It was good, but I don't know if it was the best movie of 2008. Not much was asked from the actors as the story pretty much carried it. And the fact it was made in India. I don't think it would have garnered the same rave ratings if it were about someone from the slums of Detroit, Philly or the South Bronx..

Interesting use of flashback narratives to explain how he knew the answers though.

Terminator Salvation, was quite a bit better than expected.

It's Alive.

I DVRed it, thinking it was the mid 70s movie about the monster baby (that was what the description on the cable guide said). I love B-grade horror movies and hadn't seen that one.

Well, I still haven't seen it because this was a 1969 movie with the same title about a man who keeps a reptilian monster in a cave. It was made by a director who is apparently infamous for making incredibly shitty movies. This was no exception. Not B-grade, not C-grade but Z-grade.
Might've been the worst movie I've ever watched. Definitely in the worst three or four.

Terminator Salvation

It wasn't as bad as I feared, though my wife and I were somewhat let down by the sloppy ending. How do you plan to go ahead with a heart transplant in the field, with no previous blood and tissue typing, etc?
The movie was fun to watch in general with lots of action, but not even as tightly scripted as a typical episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Rented "Quantum of Solace" and "Taken."

"QoS" is just a middling Bond film. Craig is very good but the villain was mediocre and we all know that a Bond film is only as good as its bad guy. Give it **1/2

"Taken" was a more compact film and well done if derivative. Liam Neesen is an excellent action hero. This reminded me of the "Bourne" movies. I give it ***.

The exposure of the dire poverty was shocking to me. This was filmed in one of India's "booming" city. By the way the South Bronx is far cry from the former "South Bronx".

QoS, I kept waiting for the film to start. With the exception of a great car chase in the beginning, I can recall almost nothing about it.

Taken gets filed under "Who doesn't like Liam Neeson?". Went & saw it with my son. Completely predictable, completely didn't care. It was fun to watch.

Last 7 days -

Dirty Harry (Andy Robinson can still claim being the best psycho ever.)
Dirty Harry / Magnum Force (Definitely would have had benefit from Don Siegel's direction.)
Gettysburgh (Accurate historically perhaps.)
The Mummy / Curse of the Dragon Emperor (Total crap.)
Road to Perdition (Grim & near perfect, maybe the best crime film of the 30's era.)

Saw it last night, and liked it much more than I thought I would. The cinematography really stood out, as did the actor playing the adult Jamil.

Smile Button and Stood Still

The curious case of Benjamin Button and The day the earth stood still.

We watch movies for entertainment. Both were very entertaining.

Benjamin Button was well done, I thought. Good job of making him get younger and later of making Daisy grow older.

I am a big fan of the original TDTESS, so I made a strong effort not to comapre the two. Taken on its own merits, I enjoyed it! Jennifer Connelly is always nice to see and it held my attention well.

I guess that's part of the reason why it garnered so much praise, and that's sad in many ways. Slums and shanty towns like that exist in many places around the world, Rio, Mexico City, and I'm sure in China, Asia, and Africa. Remember years ago when there were those vigilante death squads in the slums of Rio hunting down the herds of wild children who were attacking and in some cases killing tourists?

Hopefully films like this will open some folks eyes to how well off we really are here and help people realize that every child doesn't have his own room with a cell phone and PS3? It's amazing how insulated we can be from the realities of other cultures and countries even with all the cable channels ramming visuals down our throats daily.

Watched the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly on Friday... one of the best movies I have ever seen. The last scene in the graveyard was simply incredible. A bit long, though. I thought it moved much slower than A Fistful of Dollars or For a Few Dollars More. Still, an amazing movie.
