Shifting gears a bit, any of you ever read the book "Warday" by Whitley Strieber & James Kunetka ? It was a novel about events that took place about 5 years after a Soviet strike. They got New York & DC, the missile bases in the Dakotas, & San Antonio- but the South & California were pretty much spared. The most damage was NOT caused by the bombs as much as it was by the EFFECTS of the bombs- EMP damage rendered most electronic devices useless, except tube stuff, there were weird new diseases, the Japanese pretty much ran what was left of the western US, while Great Britain ran the East, lots of famines, etc. It was told in a semi-documentary fashion & it was obvious the authors had done their homework, which made the book even more chiiling. It came out in '83, & was set in '93.

I've read it. It is bleak but a good read. If you liked it you would probably like "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. A film based on the book is due in November and stars Viggo Mortensen as the main character.

No Spoilers In This Thread Please. (Not everyone will read the book.)

Sounds like the first book of a "California trilogy" written by SF writer Kim Stanley Robinson. The first book was called The Wild Shore. The others are The Gold Coast and Pacific Edge

another in the P-A book vein...

would be Sailor Song, by Ken Kesey. Truly an excellent read. Although I guess it's more of a "during-" than "post-" apocalyptical piece....

I'll also vote for Tank Girl. There's just something about a girl showering in sand...not to mention strapping on a torpedo bra and yelling

Planet of the Apes is probably my favorite, but there are many that are close
This isn't really post apocalyptic, but the Warriors is a classic.
I think Mystic would agree

A very underrated movie IMO is "Day of the Triffids."

Yes. Rather than post apocalyptic, it was set in a post mass STD scare. In the opening scene in a singles bar, a man (maybe the main character) is talking to a woman and she has a printed questionnaire, with questions like how many people have you slept with, use protection, etc.
