Please pardon my post above, but I didn't mean to say I need a VCR that runs forever, and nothing runs forever. I am determinating the two brands, Panasonic or Hitachi, based on parts availability right now, internal design, video head durability, etc. Without surface-mount caps, I am better off. With surface-mount caps, I am worse off.
