Isn't this Magnavox from the late 60's? - Videokarma.org TV - Video

I saw one of these on ebay months ago. Same design, but a portable. They said it was a 1969 I think. These folks are guessing 1980s. Nonetheless, may be of interest to some AK'ers.

Of interest to me is this line in the description: "it is one of the old tv's with a picture tube."

So now every TV with a picture tube is old!?! After reading that line I know I'm getting old... I can remember when a TV with COLOR was new and special... Wonder when a TV with a picture will be old...

It's one of the very last hybrid sets, about 1972 or 3. It was made concurrently with the first generation Magnavox solid state sets.

I knew that day was coming. It makes old TV hunting difficult because now almost anything is considered old. I have followed up on some local ads that could have been something special ("Very old RCA 21" color TV, solid wood cabinet") and it is invariably from the eighties. Trouble is that the average person has no concept of the difference between a bad crt 90s Zenith and a round color Zenith from 1963. You can describe things to them on the phone like, does it have knobs? Tubes? Rounded screen? But you can't rely on any of those descriptions they give you. You have to get in your car and drive over to their place, go down in the basement and see for yourself that the "round screen antique" they have is actually a 1985 Curtis Mathes.

As for the Magnavox here, I would have guessed late seventies. 25V crt with knobs. Going along with Charles though, I guess this could have been one of their early 25V sets. Everyone seemed to make a few hybrids that way. Magnavox cabinet design did not seem to change very fast. I have seen some of their sets from the mid-80s which at first glanced looked late 60s. The crt bezel always gives it away as being a Magnavox; that unique design was carried through for a long period of time.

What about "its hard to get channels because it has a dial" . . . man people are getting stupid!

I didn't realize you could use the top of this set as a table. Its good to know that the table part of the set is in good shape. Its hard to receive stations on the dial because this set receives stations on the UVF band. Atleast I understand the difference between a table TV and a console now.

I was watching the cable TV show "Cash in the Attic" the other evening. They had a Sony rear projector TV, looked to be about a 50" model in nice working condition. The antique expert said something to the effect that even though it was OUTDATED, it would probably still sell at auction. Things are changing fast, and not for the better.

What's weird about that RCA is that it looks like in one of the pictures the CRT appears to have its socket intact and connected to it...almost like the CRT got broken while the photos were being taken???

It appears to have suffered an electrical fire.

looks like he shoved the brightener inside the neck of the crt. You can see it sitting ontop of the chassis in the other photo.
My favorite auctions are the ones that they claim "I dont know how to turn it on" so its "untested". "untested" means it doesnt work, so you cant get angry with the seller when you find out its pos. I always like reading how sellers word things when you know they are trying to pass off their headache onto someone else.....

The only picture I'm getting to load is the one shot from the front but it looks to me like a T951 or T962 chassis set. I had one that I bought in 1973 as year old model from the dealer I was working for because it was all tube and I didn't like like the T979 solid state chassis, we were having lots of trouble with it. The hybrid set Charles is talking about was the T974, it was ok but I never cared much for it, had a wierd AGC setup that was troublesome at times. IIRC the T962's had the door to the right of the control panel that covered all the slide controls for briteness and contrast etc... I don't think the T951's had the door, and I could be wrong but I don't think the T974 used slide controls.
