This movie is big and loud with a strong cast which includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga and Alec Baldwin. Recommended if you like edge-of-the-seat tension and can deal with the strong brutal violence and pervasive profanity. Watch for the McIntosh gear in a scene, later in the movie, in Colin Sullivan's apartment.

I was drooling over that McIntosh gear! Were those Sennheiser headphones she was listening to? Awesome movie!

Thanks for the info. I saw really good reviews and a few cast interviews. So, I'm taking the wife to see it ASAP.

I just got back from seeing this at a matinee and quite honestly, was disappointed. Maybe because when I saw "Casino Royale" a few weeks back it so exceeded my expectations, that I had the same juices flowing for "The Beparted". FWIW, I think "Goodfellas" was much better and the awards Scorsese's garnered for this work are sort of accommodations for things past due.
Don't get me wrong, it's a very good movie and DeCaprio really does quite a good job, but it just didn't grab me the way it should of. Jack was basically Jack, which is fine by me and the rest of the cast was pretty good, but I really liked Wahlberg's smart ass foul mouthed cop. But it just didn'r "WOW" me like "Casino Royale" or "The Fellowship of the Rings" did. Heck, "The Usual Suspects" is a much better picture and how much acclaim did that one get???

I also had a bunch of technical and plot issues with it. Too much cell phone stuff; texting from pockets and using them in high level meetings to talk to Dad???? C'mon.
Also how does a cop afford that apt (and the Mc gear) and his MD girlfriend lives in a basement walkout???? And who was the father of the baby? Why didn't that gut shot thug rat out Billy?? What was in Billy's envelope?? And the ending was just too unsatisfying. Plus that rat on the railing in the last shot with the golden dome was just too cutesy. Just too many loose ends for a work of this magnitude.

but yep, I'll see it again, but I don't think I'll be buying it.

It was a good movie, but I prefered the movie it was based on- Infernal Affairs.

Um...because he was on the take. I think that was the point was that he had such a nice apartment. His girlfriend had suspicions, but was submissive enough not to ask, so when her suspicions were confirmed, she found them all quite believable.

I thought the ending was perfect -- just the right amount of tying up loose ends, anything that was left unraveled was relatively minor. As someone on another board pointed out to me, it was very much in the vein of an opera.

I thought it was pretty cool, had a lot of interesting plot twists and a good soundtrack as well. Not too often one hears the Dropkick Murphys in a movie.

Well, I guess part of what bothered me was the obviousness of it all.

You're looking for a couple moles, right?
So if you're the cops you don't think a guy who grew up in Costello's neighborhood, who lives in an apartment way beyond his cops salary, and who makes cell phone calls to his "Dad" (who I thought was killed by Costello or some thugs back when he was a kid) seconds before a huge bust goes awry is a suspect?? They're smart enough to find out about dealing chips to China, but can't run a few simple bakground checks???

And if you're Frank, you don't think the newest member of your crew who was a former cop and never kills anyone might be the guy??? Yeah he ASKS him a lot if he's the rat, but you think a guy who cuts hands off folks could be a bit more "persuasive" if not thorough, like checking on the second cell phone?? C'mon!!

Not an opera fan, so I still think the ending was bogus. and that impotence scene with Madolyn eating the banana after Colin can't perform was as bad as the rat on the railing.

Like I said, it's still a good movie, but not Scorsese's best.

*****SPOILER ALERT*****

He could afford the apartment as he had a cosigner (Nicholson) and said so when the realtor was asking him if the apartment was too big for him, i.e. too much for him to afford.

The gut shot cop was a cop also under cover. He died right as he was telling DiCaprio. Later when they found his body in the Lynn swamp it was on the TV stating that he was. Nicholson saw that and didn't believe it saying it was a story to let them think the rat inside his crew was dead.

Indeed, the story was far from perfect but I enjoyed it. I also think Goodfellas was a better film primarily because of Liotta. I like Departed however for DiCaprio's spectacular performance. If DiCaprio stays on the course he is on, he will be one of the few recent actors to go the way of Peck, O'Toole, etc. The other one being Edward Norton. These guys are really maturing into terrific actors. Damon on the other hand played the same character he's played in Goodwill Hunting, The Talented Mr. Ripley, & as Jason Bourne. Not bad but not dramatically good either. I wished Wahlberg was on screen more as well. He played the Southie smartass perfectly which should be no surprise.

To each his own. Even my wife didn't think it was that bloody. I really enjoyed this move and thought Leo did a wonderful job of acting. He's come a long way from What's Eating Gilbert Grape. This movie could have used more Markie Mark and less Matt Damon that's for sure. The movie only had a couple of slow moments in it and I gave it five out of five stars on my Netflix rating.

Ed Norton? IMO the best of the latest crop of young actors. He was fantastic in Down in The Valley and if you haven't watched American History X rent it! Hijack over.

Norton was good in "Fight Club" and "Rounders" too

Hijack continues -

He was great in "The Illusionist" (although Paul Giamatti made an even bigger impact on me). My favorite was one of his first, "Primal Fear". Still need to rent "Fight Club".

The Illusionist was very good too. Fight club was good but I was slow on figuring out what the he!! was going on until the very end. Then I went AH HA now this makes sense and I instantly thought it was a much better movie than I did while watching it.
