Anybody recognize this cabinet?

Hey folks:
I found this interesting electronics cabinet the otherday. It is a mystery to me, as the only label is on the rear frame, a fiber ellipse with 37 stamped on it. 37 is penciled on the 4 removable legs also. Foil paper lines the upper portion. There are two speaker positions in the bottom plate, 6" and 5", cloth still survives. A small chassis was once mounted in the bottom. The left side near the rear features a door that once slid open. It is deep enough to hold a small TV, like a 621, or maybe, with a crt rear bumpout, a 10" Admiral. Could also be a radio of course, and I will try to post it in the radio section of AK also.

I donno why the "x". It shows on mine, and a replyer to the Radio thread version of the same thing can see it. Try going to my web site directly: http://www.studio4-17.com/tvcab/37.JPG, http://www.studio4-17.com/tvcab/open.JPG,

Very interesting. Could be that the '37' is simply the cabinet maker's production identification.

Strange speaker complement. Perhaps because it housed two separate electronic systems.

The long sweeping legs: Queen Anne style? Something that could be popular prewar.

Shows fine now this morning for me! Must have been a glitch. That looks very nice, and I have to admit that I can't confirm what it is. I'm not 100% sure it's a TV cabinet. It could be a radio & phono from the late 20s, or POSSIBLY a Guild radio-record player from the 50s. RCA, Majestic and Magnavox did make TVs with that style of cabinet, so that's also a possibility.

Maybe someone else can comment?

I've been down a lot lately....Oh, you meant my SERVER!

I have the rather common 1949 RCA with the same legs (16" tv) but they always in my experience put their decal somewhere in front, even to splitting the name on the doors. This thing has the original finish, ruling out decal removal, and is too small for the larger 16" chassis. I have been assuming two speakers meant two electronics's, with the TV getting the better speaker, but it coulda been two widely different radio chassis. Upper chassis mount holes indicate that it was nearly the size of the whole upper "table", pretty much ruling out a reach-in device, like a record turntable. Bad looking foil might also indicate no visibility of any of the upper interior surfaces. Lower chassis was small, no bigger than an American 5 radio. That is why I was thunkin' it mighta been an Admiral '48 or so vintage TV, as it had 2 chassis. Would not need the two speakers though.

Talking

Not sure, but, reminds me of an old "Outer limits" where they actually had a 10" chinese painted tv with the same cabinet shapes as this. Make un known. Chassis used there didn't look familiar. Not an RCA. My guess is a mediteranium style case with queene Anne looks. Some weired things were done with furniture. Looks like 50's look to me. Could be completely wrong, though. My guess is the cabinet was made to house a generic set of some sort. The two large holes confuse me, though. Pehaps a scond chassis went on bottom?Hmmmm. Bill C

Probably not a tv. Two different size speakers most likely indicate a 'hi-fi' set -non stereo. Foil probably not original and if removed might provide more info. Bottom could have been for turn table. Few tv sets of the '50/60/70's would have used these legs. So, what do you have? I have no idea.............................

Those elongated cutouts for vents (on the floor) seem common to the tv era. What heads are on the screws?

I am leaning toward the idea of it being a Guild hi-fi console. I think I remember seeing one like this! The speaker holes would make sense. I'd maybe repost this in the antique radio thread, and ask "Is this a Guild cabinet?"

Guild made some really neat sets in the 50s and 60s; one that looked like an antique oak wall telephone, one that was a grand piano, a rolltop desk, and even a kitchen spice rack. They were very high quality cabinets. I also saw a Guild TV that was in a cabinet like this, and I think it was a companion to this HiFi cabinet, if my theory is right.

I have a 1949 Brunswick 10" TV which is similar. Brunswick made phograph, radio and television cabinetts and used other manufacturer's chassis.

Marlin,

Its good to see you back at AudioKarma. Someone had asked about you several months ago on another forum. I'm the guy who you met at Peter Yanczer's Mechanical TV convention in St. Louis around aug 2000/2001 who told you about the color TV in VA.

I don't know what that cabinet's from but it's way cool, and
since it's already empty it's just begging to be retrofitted with something cool. in a reversible manner of course in case the original guts ever turn up.
