Zenith problem 9-160-08 module - Videokarma.org TV - Video

Recently I was given 2 early 1980's Zenith 19" sets...one has Space Phone, the other does not. One of them had no green and one (The Space Phone model) would not stay powered up. Shuts down after about 30 secs. I got the first set going by exhanging the video/CRT module out of the one with the power problem. Resoldering the resistor pack didn't help.
Just wondered if you had some suggestions for common failures on the 9-160-08 module? Common bad caps?

Chad, I think that module alaways was a common problem on the early System 3's. Zenith corrected those in later runs. I can see if I have any new modules around.

I used to fix many a 9-160 module by soldering the crap out of it especially if it's never been rebuilt.Common parts that didn't get much solder and break loose are the diodes in the output circuit,flyback pins,12v startup transformer.filter choke etc.The dual filter can failed a lot.One section of which could cause shutdown.The early ones did have a problem that caused horizontal output transistor failure.They used the same resistor and cap in the emitter circuit as the chromacolor II chassis that failed a lot.All the rebuilt ones are modified with much lower value wirewound resistors and no electrolytic capacitor.

Wow! It's been a while since I worked on one of those. As I remember, what JCFitz is right. Lots of soldering (especially those big chokes). I also sometimes saw bad connections where the cables attach to the edge of the board. make sure the contacts aren't gunked up, or broken off. I doubt you'll ever find a 2-section cap for the B+ filter, so probably need to use 2 seperate caps.
19" with spacephone? Is that SY1963W?
Back in the late 80s I used to have a lot of trouble with the rebuilt modules failing soon after installing them. I had one guy who called me back 4 times in less than a month, each time the 9-160 failed, and a different failure each time, and I'd put in another one, and a few days later, *poof* again. Almost quit working on Zenith after that. It got so bad that I wouldn't install one until I'd resoldered the stuffing out of the new module myself.

I seem to remember a diode near one corner of the board that occasionally failed because of heating in the cracked solder connections. Maybe I'm thinking of another board.

Adam bought a LOAD of those modules from a friend of mine late last year... Maybe he has a NOS one? That should cross to a 9-160-06.

9-160-06 and the 9-160-04 WILL driectly interchange for each other. Possibly so will the 9-160-08. The ODD number ones, 9-160-03 and 9-160-05 are interchangeable.

HOWEVER.....I once used and '04 for an '05, IIRC. I only had to re-orient a couple of wires in the power supply section, all worked perfectly otherwise.

They're all in the back of a large closet behind lots of CRTs and junk chassis, and I'm really busy right now trying to sell one car and buy another, so I don't have time to go through them now, but I'll check to see if I have one in a week or so.

If you still need one of these, I have several of the 9-160-06s, but no 08s.

06 is a sub for the 08. Basically, with a few exceptions, the 9-160-xx with an EVEN number will cross to the 06, and the ODD number suffix would cross to the 05.
