I got this set today for free, and it works! The cabinet is in beautiful shape. The remote option was the factor in getting the set. My tube Zenith now has a rectangular friend. The tag on the CTC 81 back says it was made in 1976. I'm setting up for football season. I need to have the ability to watch two football games and the NASCAR race at the same time. It is nice to be single!

I need to know what the remote looks like. Can any Akers help with this? I will have to shop Ebay for a replacement.

Dude! SWEET set! I might actually have the remote for that set. If anyone does have a pix they can scan that would be cool. If mines the same I'll send it to ya.

What's the model number? I'll check the service manual for part number and see if I can post a pic of it. I'm sure it is ultrasonic, not IR.

Model number GA724L. It would be sweet to find the remote. I would not have to run it through the VCR. It would be independant of the other televisions.

Here it is. 3 buttons; Volume down/power off, Volume up/power on and Channel advance. I bet almost any ultrasonic remote can be used, but the buttons may not have the same labels. My Dad uses a 6 button Zenith remote on his 1979 RCA. Just had to re-label the buttons

If you look at the lower left corner of the pic I posted, you can see the remote you have with the price I used to pay for it written next to it. (yes, $85.00!)

Hey, are you sure that's a remote set? I am not sure that it is, as it shouldn't have any channel knob if it's remote. But it's been a long time, and I might be wrong on that.

If it's a remote capable set, the one you show might work some of the functions, but that was for a newer set (CTC-99-CTC-101) and doesn't have an on-off control. The one Geoff shows might be correct for that set. Most CTC-81s had the hated "0-9" keyboard that had only an OFF button, and to turn the set on, you had to select a channel. And there was NO way to power the set on without the remote

. It was a werid remote, with a padded upholstered case!

I could be wrong. What is the little orange sensor on the top? I do not have the SAMS for this set. If it is not remote then I still have a nice set. I keep thinking that I was only 10 years old when this was made. The year long Bicentennial celebration was in full swing.

that sensor is a light sensor. Put your finger over it when the set is on and you will see the brightness change. It changes the brightness level with the room light. I don't know why they quit putting those in sets as I thought it was a great feature that seemed to be the "rage" on 70's sets. Magnavox and RCA used em. Zenith had them on the sets with "color sentry". On theirs you pushed the color sentry button and the sensor was right in the middle. And ya Charles... if this was a remote set I thought it might use the padded remote as well (which is the one I have).

These sets use a motor to turn the channel knob. The motor is located in the tuning assy, back edge center. Looks like an old electric clock motor.

I checked the service manual for remote control frequencies. For the origional remote:

Vol up 44.75 Khz
Vol dn 38.75 Khz
chan 41.75 Khz

I don't have a manual with me for the half-round remote you showed, I'll be at the shop later today and look it up.

Jingle your car keys in front of it....sometimes that will make these sets do stuff

I just looked again. I dont see the motor in your picture. I think I screwed up. When you said remote, I automatically added "R" to the model number to account for it being a remote model. If the is no "R" at the end of the model, then Charles is right, it is not a remote set.

I'll be hiding in the corner.

On closeup, that's definitely not a remote set... It does have an electronic tuner though. As Jstout66 says, that little lens is the auto-contrast sensor. A useless gadget of the time, that a lot of manufacturers "had to have". I think Magnavox is guilty of starting that in the late 50s on black & white sets. On those, it was a huge round red lens.

One more note on that TV: It must be just about the last gasp of the CTC-81 series, and I don't think I've ever seen an 81 with that tuner! Most of the ones with that tuner were CTC-92, 99, and 101. Somebody is going to give me a CTC-81 with a standard click tuner, and it's in 100% mint condition with original papers and all. Same cabinet as yours shown at the beginning of the thread. I don't know what to do with it, so I'll post here when it comes. Hopefull it will stay where it is for awhile, but if anyone is interested, send me an eMail. It's in the Los Angeles area.
