|
1986 Quasar dynacolor - trash it or save it?
I can pick up the above TV in unknown (prolly non-working) condition for free.
I am a complete noob over here on the TV boards. If it were not for AK, I would not even be considering this. So should I let it go to the dump, or give it a home?

If it's an '86, it's actually a Panasonic. Definitely no cash value, but they're pretty reliable TVs.
However, if you're off on the year, and it's actually a mid 70s Quasar, those are just beginning to get collectable because they're the very last Motorola sets made in the USA. Still not much of any cash value, but interesting enough to save! Charles

Thanks. Not looking for cash value, looking for usability. Not wrong on the date, the Model sticker has it printed clearly on it.
There is no power available where it sits, I'll have to haul it home to even start diagnosing whatever was/is wrong with it.

Those are pretty reliable, but they are notorious for bad flybacks when they do poop out. If the set won't power up, that might be what it needs. Probably the original Panasonic is no longer available, but you can get an aftermarket one for $15 or so. Also you'll need a few other small parts if the flyback is shot.
But let's be positive here; maybe the set works fine! Charles

Kaye-Halbert TV, you may be right on the transformer. I have not had the set open yet, but I got power to it and ... nothing. Just dead. I'll try to get the back off tomorrow and have a look. Thanks for the advice! I'm sure I'll need more...

My advice on most used TVs is: If it doesn't work WELL, pass on it. If you want it as part of a collection, or for a project, go for it, otherwise, it's probably dumpster chow. I agree with Kaye-Halbert that the flyback may be toast, and probably NLA from Panasonic. Also, the CRT is 20 years old, and I bet it doesn't look so good. The tuner might not know how to tune all of the cable channels you get. Working TVs are a dime-a-dozen these days. Look for one that works.
