Really exotic or weird XBR Trinitron 29" console - Videokarma.org TV - Video

I picked up this 29" Sony KV-29XBR45 on Thursday... This is a console with VCR compartment below, and smoke safety glass out front of the tube. I had seen one of these before, and always was curious whether this was ever sold in the USA. It basically is the same chassis as a KV-32XBR25, but has a very bizarre 29" CRT. Also has a remote control motor-driven swivel base. This is a full 1-piece console; not a table model TV on a semi-attached base. The TV does not separate from the bottom. The audio subchassis is in the bottom part, and has many cables interconnecting with the TV chassis. Also has the degaussing thermistor on the bottom chassis, and has a jumper across where it normally is located in the USA sets. Just to clarify about the screen size: This is 29" Viewable. NOT a 27" viewable "29 inch" Canadian set. See the photo for the picture tube decal. The original owner says he bought the TV in Guam on a USA military base (used).

The base rotator motor control board is shown where I'm pointing in the #3 photo.

I like weird stuff, so that's the only reason I picked it up. NO place to put it besides the middle of the diningroom as shown in the photos

Those were sold in the US. I've fixed two of them over the years. The ones I worked on had tons of bad solder connections on every single board.

That makes sense, since this is an NTSC-only set. I have seen other Philippine Sonys, and they are also NTSC. I worked on plenty of 27XBR and 32XBR sets with that chassis, just don't recall any 29" CRT sets here at all. Must have been a low production for the US market.

I worked on one of these about 6 months ago. The people said they bought it new. They've always lived here in the Pacific Northwest. The problem I found? A bunch of bad solder connections. When I was done, it looked pretty good, but the CRT has lost a little bit of that crispness it surely had when it was new.

This one had an open resistor in the G2 circuit, and I changed the diode too. It didn't seem to have any cold solder joints, but I ALWAYS ALWAYS resolder the pins on the Horiz Drive transformer and transistor on these years of Sony. The CRT is good, but as you mention on the one you saw, not quite what it probably was out of the box in '92. Works great, but I don't have the remote with the turntable base control.
