I saw this solid state "Porta-Color" (no longer officially called PortaColor, but I still call it that)... The title of the eBay ad says "ANTIQUE 1978". Now I still ride dirt bikes, and I still get carded when I buy beer. Those two things keep me feeling young. But now this guy is selling an ANTIQUE TV that was made when I was in the 6th grade

I guess this is par for the course, because I have a couple of cars that are insured as classics that I could have bought new when I was over 18.

Charles....It gets worse, in 1978 my Daughter was 3 and my Son was just born. It bothers me to think that the new car we bought the year we were married has been considered an Historical Motor Vehicle for 10 years now.....

I graduated college in 1978, Syracuse Univ, BSEE. Before PCs and the Internet. Anyway, I remember interviewing back then at the GE plant in Portsmouth VA where they used to make TVs like these. I saw TV chassises on hooks on belts overhead, and such. Morons didn't hire me....

Yeah, that does sound pretty funny, calling the Second-Son-of-PortaColor an "antique"...

Charles, I'm not much younger than you, but here's something that happened to me a few years ago that *really* made me feel old.

I was looking at a museum display showing old telephone equipment. Included was an "interactive" display where they had an old telephone crossbar relay switch set up with a couple of rotary-dial phones connected to it. You could pick up one of the phones and dial it, while watching the relay switches move and rotate. Dial the other phone's number, it rings and you can talk to someone else on the other phone.

Well, this mom walks in the room with her son, who was probably around 10 years old, and they look at the display. Mom walks over to the other phone, and asks the son to dial the phone number so he can make the phone ring. The child just stares blankly at the phone unsure what to do. He tenatively tries turning the dial slowly back and forth, to no avail. The mom then realizes that her son had probably never seen a dial phone before-- she laughs, then walks over and shows him how to dial the phone.

Man, I just felt so *old* just then...

But I suppose it's true-- lots of kids these days probably wouldn't have ever encountered a rotary-dial phone before.

At least you get carded still.My younger cousin(23) just got married last month.He wanted to go to a local nightclub for his bachelor party.Most of the guys handed their license to the lady with their cover charge and she checked it.I went up and she looked at me and she didn't even want to see my license.I'm the same age as you Charles.I'll be 38 on 6/6/06.I'm starting to get gray in my moustache also.I'm also starting to get CRS(can't remember s***)

Oh well last I heard here in TN there was a bill up for the Gov. to sign making it a requirement to card everyone no matter what their age. Supposed to help stop underage drinking. I guess then I will be able to feel old or young depending on my point of view for the day.

Makes me feel old as well... I was born in '82. But just saying something 4 years older than myself is antique :p

My little cousins, who are 9 and 10, never even seen a black and white TV before they saw mine, and they freaked out when they found out a lot of my old TVs don't have any remotes

To add on the topic with vinyl and feeling old...my two nephews were born post vinyl and had never seen any until they came over to my house. Their comment was "thats the biggest cd i ever seen". That made me feel ancient but of course i had to show them how they worked on a turntable and from what i could see they were impressed. I still havent showed them the reel to reel set-up yet

Wow; I'm really old! I would have picked up the phone, clicked the hook a few times, and bellowed "HELLO, CENTRAL??? HELLO, CENTRAL???; Get me AXminster 1016 please!" (Just kidding). But the scary thing: When I was a toddler, AXminster-1016 was our phone number in Los Angeles I remember when the Bell Telephone guy came and put the new sticker on the phone dial that had the "NEW" all-numeric 7-digit number and we stopped saying AXminster and started saying 291-0165.

I'll be 40 this year on July 8th, although I still get carded at times and people think I'm in my mid 20's. I think I get it from Mom's side of the family, they hold their ages very well.
