Red smearing on a SONY - Videokarma.org TV - Video

Hi folks, maybe someone can confirm my suspicions that my CRT is getting tired

My 13 year old 27" Trinitron XBR will smear red from bright objects if I crank the brightness up too high.

It started doing it a couple years ago if you cranked the picture and brightness up but now it will sometimes do it even at normal levels.

It works great otherwise.

If I recall correctly this is a bad tube but maybe you know another cause?

What's a new tube cost?

I plan on getting something new in the next year or so but I might like to keep this set for a bedroom set.

That sounds like the classic case of a crt losing emission. Backing off on the contrast will buy some time. I have a Sony 19" monitor and find the picture control is about adequate at minimum front panel setting (meaning it is setup too high inside). If yours is like this look for a control inside the set to crank back on this level.

I cannot see the set being worth buying a new CRT for though, not with all the options out there today.

I have gotten a few of those xbr's in for recycling, Every one still worked, But had a bad tube

there are a few other ways to stretch it out.
turn the rgb bias pots all the way down and adjust for the best greyscale making up the lost brightness with the screen/g2.
make sure the heater voltage is right.
have seen several sets that were sick and slow to brighten up that were found to have low heater voltage due to a bad cap in the smps.should be 6.3v

This set uses a processor for all the adjustments, you hold the recessed button down while powering it up, then you can adjust settings using the remote.

Oh well, if it will keep going for another year or two I will replace it with a HD set

every sony that has been in my shop lately has a bad picture tube. seems they are not holding up well. steve

Steve, how old are the sets you are seeing?

After 13 years and a zillion hours of use I'm not too disappointed with the performance of this one

I was more disappointed that I had to resolder many of the PC connections when it was about 2 years old but that's the only problem I've had with the set.
