Found this interesting set at a Phoenix Goodwill. It's not the type of set I collect, but I thought somebody here might want it. I did end up using it a little bit for Hogan's Heros re-runs as I painted an upstairs hallway.

It appears to be a monitor-type set. Everything is commercial quality (Grounded cord, heavy cabinet, lots of ventilation, multiple AV inputs) As I said, not my bag, but I appreciate anything of good quality. Didn't want to see it hit the dumpster 'cause some lazy slob couldn't do without a remote.

The controls feel a bit dirty, so the color is a bit weak.

It has a very good tuner.. Picked up lots of weak UHF signals with just a piece of ground wire as an antenna.

Model number is on there...

That is way cool. i've never seen a trinitron like that. How's the CRT look? do the colors look correct or is it a shade of purple like in the picture. Seems as though every sony i've picked up has had a dead or week green gun.

The CRT is good, although I'm sure it could use a grey scale touch up after all these years. The purple tint is something from the camera... If you notice, the Zenith shows a purple tint in the corner of the man's shirt, looking like bad purity. In real life, the purity is excellent.

Forgot to mention, that's just a 9" CRT! The cabinet is freakin' huge!

The three silver buttons are: TV, VTR, Line (inputs) It also has the bright/color/tint knobs behind a door, under the CRT, just like an old Zenith. Never seen a Sony like that.

Yes; that's a nice one! That series was designed for industrial, school & hospital use (CVM-xxxx). They often were used with the old u-Matic VTRs that schools and hospitals had. Notice the special Sony VTR jack on the back. Most of the time, the woodgrain cabinets are all banged up on those, but yours looks nice!

They had CVM series in sizes all the way from 8" up to 30", and ran from the early 70s up to the present as far as I know. (The 30" CVM-3000 weighs over 300 lbs!) Basically, it's a PVM series with a tuner added.

I had a similar 12 inch set years ago. I don't remember the model number, but it looked like a KV-1201 with video inputs. It was a simple PAL set with a tint control. It has the same 8 pin VTR connector. It worked great for a while until it developed a weird veritcal foldover problem. It was beyond me at the time, I was around 12 (it may still be beyond me, who knows?). The sets long gone now. At the time we took it to a repair shop and even couldn't work it out. They offered us some other 14" set and would take the Sony as a trade in, but we didn't take it. It wasn't a Sony and it didn't have a video input.

The 8 pin connector wasn't exclusive to Sony. I've seen it on many old monitors and VTRs. There is an EIAJ standard pinout, but not all manufacturers followed it. On most devices it carries video and mono audio in out (most of those old Umatic VCRs didn't have tuners, if you wanted record off air you needed to use the TV's tuner). On some monitors it carries RGBs video, on some VTRs it carries power and sync for the camera.

We also had a similar 21 inch JVC set. It obviously wasn't a Trinitron, but it had a wood grain cabinet, a click tuner and the same 8 pin VTR connector. That set was practically bullet proof and is probably still working somewhere out there today.

I miss those old sets.

I really like this old Sony stuff, primarily because I grew up with alot of Sony (Trinitrons, all of our Vtrs, etc). I once had a 5" Black and White Sony tv from 1969, as stated on some television history website (I don't remember the site) which I inherited from a great-grandmother, and it worked great until my friend left it playing outside on the deck one summer evening and it started to rain! It was partly my fault, because we were cleaning up a party we had at the house, and we weren't exactly fit for tending to a vintage set! Still wonder what that screen actually displayed when the rain hit the HV and all other circuitry. It's a shame...
