RCA XL-100 Estate find
It's not much, but at least I have found a set lately that is over 20 years old!
Seemed to look better at the sale in the huge living room where it sat since new! Now that it's in my crowded shop it just kind of blends in with all the other junk! Not a bad deal though for five bucks, and as usual it works just fine with just a slightly dirty tuner. Have not bothered to take off the back to see what chassis it has. My God. Panelled walls... shag carpeting... plastic window panes... Naugahyde recliner...it's 1978! That TV is right at home there! $5 is a steal.

The house was in mint condition, built in the mid 70's. Even had a mother in law apartment in the huge basement, that alone had 1-1/2 baths! Upstairs had 3 as well as a huge family room with a cathedral ceiling.

Where was it good capt'n? That house sounds awesome! I went to one today in SCS, just in time to see somebody leaving with a 40's console radio and 40s Westinghouse fridge.
Everything else was pure junk, lol!

Wow the one I went to was just off 11 mile, west of Harper. Wish I'd known about the one you went to... I always check that stupid little freebie paper for estate sales, but nothing this week. I only found the one I went to because I went out for pizza.
375K gets you a lake view or a canal I'd hope.

27" is classic big screen size for easy viewing. Must of been big bucks sold for originally. Very groovy.

That is a CTC-68, made from 1975-1978, it actually has a 25" screen rather than 27". It is the "entry level" XL-100 solid state console, replacing the tube type CTC-39 which was discontinued in 1974.
You can tell the earlier models of the CTC-68 as they have the RCA logo on the left side of the screen and the later ones have it on the speaker grille. Last edited by Chad Hauris; 01-15-2006 at 09:31 PM.

I like that 70's living room, I once went to a thrift store about 10 years ago in Santa Cruz and they had two huge rolls of that red/orange shag carpet in the back room next to about 40 old fridges.

Chad was right on the money, it is a CTC 68. For some reason there is a new flyback in a plastic bag that was left in the set. No traces of looking like it was ever soldered in...
From the date codes, it looks like late '74 early '75 to me. I noticed the crt is starting to delaminate like the older '60s ones. Look at the pictures I first posted and you will see on the very edges that the pva is starting to cloud and bubble. My Heathkit GR2001 built in '79 is just starting to do that as well... Also, see the cheapo cabinet design with plastic sides and fiberboard bottom! Sadly, I have seen Zenith and other models like this also from that era.
