Say, Samsung Sings Sometimes, See?

Our bedroom tv is an early 90s 13" Samsung. Works fine but sometimes the flyback whines even worse than an old GE. Other times you can't here it. Is there anything that can be done or should I just live with it?

(related: once bought an old advertising clock that was lit by 2 small flourescent tubes. One of the transformers had a terrible buzz. I could squeeze on it with my hands & quiet it down to a point so finally I took one of my favorite devices, a hose clamp, and wrapped it around the transformer & tightened it up real good. It worked fine for a few seconds, then the light got real bright, then a lot brighter, then FZZT! I won't use a hoseclamp on the Samsung!)

Sometimes you can quiet a noisy flyback with a toothpick or similar non-conductive material wedged between the coil and the core. Some Epoxy may also work.

Bryan there was probably brittle insulation on the ballast wires.Almost every jukebox we work on that is older than the mid 70's or so has brittle wiring on the ballasts due to heat and we replace them. These are usually simple 2 wire ballasts that you can get at Home Depot or the hardware store for about $5.00 and they have new plastic insulation that is a lot tougher than the old cloth covered wire.

For the noisy Samsung, you can open it up and poke around with a plastic alignment tool and see if you can see what's yelling. I wouldn't blame the FBT yet... I have seen loud noises from the yoke, and often the little choke that filters the AC line right where the line cord come into the board. If it's the yoke, wa2ise's toothpick idea is what to try. If it's the AC choke, you can replace it from another TV, or pour epoxy glue in it. If you can't find it at all, try wedging an eraser under the PC board. It's a mickey-mouse repair, but it sometimes works!

Luckily the sign has 2 lamps with seperate ballasts & one gives off plenty of light. Its a "Diet Like" sign from the 60s. I think I have a spare ballast now, but back when I got this I had less stuff in the junkbox & was even dumber than I am now!

The next time Kim gets to whining about the Samsung whining I'll poke around & see if I can shut it up...

At our Wal-Mart we sold 13inch batman tv's for $35.00 after christmas. I think the demo set sold for $15.00. Today I saw two purple Bratz tv's for $49.00 they will likely be marked doen to $25.00 tomorrow if they are still there.
