Motorola VT-71 Questions
My VT-71 seems to be missing the bottom cover. If I turn the set upside down I can see the bottom of the chaiss. What was used to cover the bottom and how was it mounted?
I'm fond of the little VT-71. My Dad back the early 1950's in college got one and didn't like transformerless design. So he rewired filled it with all 6v tubes and added a power transformer. Later in the mid 1960's I ended up with as my first tv. Unfortunatly that set is long gone but I found one in good shape but is missing the mask. It's seen alot repair work in that most of the caps have been replaced and it almost works, two pictures but no sound. BTW what the latest devolements on the mask? I did cut a piece of wood to support the front edge of the picture tube. Terry

Hi Terry, welcome to AK!
Here's a picture of the bottom plate, it's just a flat piece of sheet steel with about a 1/4" lip on three sides. Some models had a row of holes for adjusting the channel selector slugs. Eric

Tnx for the pic! That should be easy fabricate. I was thinking that it might have been something non conductive. It's alittle shocking to find out that it's steel.

Bottom Plate
 These VT-71s really have a nice picture!!!! first B/W 40s I restored. That picture had sharpness, brightness and detail rivaling modern sets I didn't see in 40s admiral 7" I restored later. I then regretted selling my vt 71 even tho an ac/dc set with throw back simple wafer contact tuner. These are great restored!!! A bottom cover would be definetely worth doing on this set. Actually, I THINK THESE ARE BETTER TO COLLECT THAN TRANSFORMER SETS ANYWAYS, NO POWER TRANSFORMER TO GO BAD. ---- Is this the first mass produced ac/dc TV set??????

It is not an AC/DC set. The voltage doubler power supply won't double on DC.
It is a historic set,the first one on the market for less than $200 [as claimed by Motorola] The set is a marvel,tho. The engineering is superb,especially working as well as they do with a minimum of components. They made a lot of them and a good profit on each one.

Tnx for the encougerment! I'm looking forward to getting this set in shape. But so many projects so little time. I got a couple more sets coming in so I'm waiting on everything to get here so I can order most of the parts at one time. Along with the tv's I also restore radios, do some homebrewing (radio) and I'm a ham op. Then there is the wife and four kids oh and 1961 ford....

What kind of 1961 Ford ? Tudor or Fordor? Fairlane, Galaxie, Falcon ? 6 or V-8? What kinda ham stuff you got? Into Boatanchors or Rice Boxes ? Oh, boy, you went & done it now...There's a LOT of gearheads here, & more than a few hams...We'll pester the hell outta you, wanting to know about yer gear...-Sandy G.

Well, the Ford is a Falcon 4DR 144cid 3 on the tree Ham stuff just about all ba's from National SW-3's to Collins R-390a and on the tx side from Gross radio CW-25 to Johnson Valiant with some H-W TBS-50's throw in for good measure. Mosly work 80 and 40mtr AM

I will be happy to hear if you are successful in creating replacement VT-71 CRT masks. I can use two of them, and many others here probably can as well.
