These later CM mega-consoles are a hunk of junk...all of that woodwork is plastic and particle board, it has an NEC hot chassis TV chassis in it, and a cheap stereo. I have a similar style one from the 50's or early 60's with that top part extension that is all real wood and has a good tube type CM b/w TV, radio and phono.
CM really cheaped out by this point in the 70's trying to replicate their earlier finer cabinetry with cheap materials and electronics.

Sets like this are just depressing to me. Reminds me of a big plastic/pressed wood Admiral I had once. Everything about these things is just pitiful. Not competitive at all with their contemporaries from RCA/Zenith/Magnavox or even GE.

Glad to hear set is not worth saving since too big. Although from picture , CRT masks and TV parts ARE wood color to match cabinet, very clean design and retro. I always wondered if any TV maker attempted to blend TV into cabinet style like this example. Should this be saved, I'm sure will be only example as console IS HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can picture this in older mansion with plenty of wood furniture with wood paneled walls.............

I worked on one similar to this a long time ago(1987)on my first TV shop job:
It did NOT have the upper shelf-type design, but was a combo, and it WAS a hot chassis, (I am sure of that), and it SU&CKED, IMHO, from a quality standpoint. It was a mid-70's model, all SS. As for the stereo, it was $hit, kind of like a Morse(remember those), and was maybe 5w/ch. I would NOT had taken it, if someone would have given it to me!!

I agree with the experts on this one. I get a wierd feeling just being around those expensive things that were packed with cheap, unreliable electronics that performed so poorly. I bet it is a '78 or so. Even as a kid I could tell the difference and always wondered why so many adults are fooled into paying lots of money for stuff that is obviously junk. A lady friend of mine bought a Magnavox combo in '79 and even that system is much lower in quality than earlier stuff. I think she paid like $1,600.00 but I could be wrong. She still has it and I may take it someday because it is almost like new but something went wrong with the STAR chassis and she used it a long time with the crt overloaded with extreme brightness for probably a year or so. So, I don't like the idea of having to find a crt for it. Does anybody have an opinion on the crt being able to have a great picture even after being used a long time with way overloaded brightness to a point of needing to put the contrast way up to avoid washed out picture? She now has a 25" Sharp or Sanyo sitting on top. She was going to have it put in the combo but luckily she is way too cheap to pay for it!
