Sony 5-303W - Videokarma.org TV - Video

Does anyone have a schematic for the 5-303W Sony portable? Mine lost the raster recently and it would help to have a diagram to get it going again. If anyone has a copy they could scan and e-mail, I would sure be grateful.

Thanks, Andy for the scans of the schematic. They printed out nice and clear and it looks like it has all the information I will need. I really appreciated the information and I couldn't believe how quickly you sent it. This TV is one of the highlights of my collection and it will be great to get it running again.

I'm glad I could help. Someone else scanned it for me, so I'm happy to pass it along. My 5-303W hasn't been the most reliable set. I bought it at a yard sale when I was a kid. I've only turned it on occasionally and it's failed several times for one reason or another. Not to mention it's chronic noisy controls and poor IF performance.

I have had better success with mine although I don't use it all the time since it doesn't have UHF. Someday, I would like to get the converter for it. Mine really needs a total recap but the reception is rather good. Being the first 5" solid state set it is quite remarkable not to mention built like a tank.

Yeah, and I think they made a blue bazillion of 'em. You might even think about gettin' another one or 2 off e-bay for parts...My dad got me one for Xmas,1962. I was 5. I treated it like a 5-year-old would, which is to say it lived a rough life & was on pretty much constantly. it finally gave up the ghost the summer they landed on the moon, & I got a 9" Sony. Do you have the little suitcase that came with 'em? Made a dandy "overnite' bag in college-room for a couple pairs of drawers, maybe a clean t-shirt,toothbrush, & deodorant. Hey, we're all set! Let's go....<grin.-Sandy G.

I do have the suitcase, the instruction manual with photos of how to install it in an early '60s vehicle, original unused earphone, spare fuse and external antenna connector. I also have another set in rough shape I am keeping for parts. Just about everyone of these sets you find today needs the electrolytics replaced, especially in the sweep board. On the Sony website there is an interesting history of the development and testing of this TV.

They oughta have one of these little guys on a pedestal somewhere in Sony's main office, & the top guys oughta bow to it every so often, because this little TV basically was the product that made the great Sony legend of unique bulletproof products they had..When this l'il fella came on the market, it was just a matter of time til OUR TV industry was finished. They were/are cute, they worked, & they didn't break.-Sandy G.

I bought mine as a young teenager (mid-80s), I think I partially bartered something for it. Cost me $15 including the suitcase & battery pack. I later somehow lost of destroyed the battery pack but found another real cheap. I remember once going on an overnight trip for in school & the place we stayed had no television. I snuck this set along & was able to watch Johnny Carson that night! Mine always worked well but with a noisy audio, a bad cap I'm sure. The last time I turned it on the audio was dead. Not looking forward to fixing it. I also have a later model w/UHF that I don't think works; also a Sharp without a cabinet, for parts, looks just like these things.

I remember taking mine to Pawley's Island, S.C. in '65. The hotel we stayed in was "rustic", no TV, phones, A/C. Nobody bothered to lock their doors, & pretty soon, all the kids in the place were congregating in our room, to watch the TV. I remember taking it to the "great room" & watching "the Addams Family" on it.-Sandy G.

I'm definately looking to get one of these sets. andy, would you be able to send the photofact scan to [email protected] ? I won on ebay what I think might be a NIB CRT for one of these sets. So it's the electrolytics that need replacing?

Would anyone have a working one they'd want to part with? :P

Hello,

I received my 5-303W yesterday. I purchased a 1/8 to F adapter and connected my satellite receiver to it. The picture is tilted slightly, and it seems to flicker in contrast or brightness, I can't tell which. The picturte is really sharp, so the tuner and IF sections are good. Just now as the TV plays, I heard a sizzle/release of hot liquid, and some smoke came out. I'm guessing it's an electrolytic. It's playing now as I write this, but it's being turn off in a few minutes.

What do you guys usually do to these sets to make them more reliable and operate better? Is it a good idea to replace every electrolityc? Also, the paper/oil capacitor, this must be replaced as well? Other than replacing these capacitors, since the tuner and IF section is in good condition, I suppose that is all that needs to be done other than cleaning pots, etc?
