Phillips TV find
Been helping clean out a TV shop the last two weeks. Uncovered this little gem today. Decided to drag it home and see what makes it tick. Was excited that it was a tube set.
 A definite keeper in the collection. Real strange chassis and tuner. The tuner has pushbuttons. The coax cable is cut off on the back of the set. Does anybody know what goes on the ends? polaraman

It definitely does look like a PAL set. The fact that the entire face of the tube, including the black outer border, is visible, suggests a european design, and the pushbutton tuner with very few channels definitely suggests PAL. My guess is that the clipped co-ax you found went to the tuner/IF stages. It almost looks like someone was trying to jury-rig an outboard tuner into it to receive NTSC. Look for other component changes as wel, could be a hint into what the person was trying to do. Could have been trying to tap into the IF stage before the video amplifier. I've done this before on small black and white tube portables - by disconnecting the IF stages from the video amplifier tube and feeding a properly biased (and isolated... hot chassis!) composite video signal into the grid of the tube, it's possible to use a television to display composite video, to be used as a monitor on a computer. (Apple II, etc). Don't know how such modifications would help in converting a PAL set though, since the 50/60hz difference would probably hose everything, not to mention the different signal decoding and horizontal resolution.

It is a European set. All the writing is in French. The power supply has a clip that you can change to 4 different voltages. I may try later to see if I can get a raster.
