Align sound and picture fine tuning

Haven't worked on a TV in a while. One thing I can't seem to remember is how to adjust a TV so that the picture sharpness and lack of buzz in the audio peak at the same point of adjustment of the fine tuning control. Is this trivial or does it require a full alignment? Can't seem to find any reference to this adjustment in my TV books, maybe haven't looked hard enough.

It depends on the set. There were split carrier sound and inter-carrier sound sets. Split sound sets you fine tune for best audio and best picture should match that. Inter-carrier sets (sound splits after the video detector) you tune for best picture and sound should automatically be good.

On split-carrier sets if sound and picture don't line up you need to give the set a full alignment.... At least that's the "proper way". I've found if the video alignment is good enough to get a fairly perfect picture with a Philips PM5544 test pattern I can usually walk the sound alignment by ear to a state where the set works as good as you'd expect a new set to...All split sound sets are the old 21MHz IF and I don't have alignment gear for that frequency so the "proper way" isn't an option for me.

Inter-carrier sets you can align the sound as needed without touching anything else and it will be fine and proper.

Hey thanks for the excellent summary! Looks like mine is inter-carrier, here's a snippet of the schematic.
