Not only was it a lovely day spent with friends and family, but I also received an unexpected gift from a fellow collector.

This will keep me busy for a long while



I've wanted a Philco 48-1000 for a long time. This one needs a little cosmetic work but appears untouched inside.

I sure wish ALL the country had a good Independence Day. Too much violence and strife. How long will this country survive?

We had a great 4th around here. A couple of small towns had reverse parades! (Spectators drive by stationary floats). Our town had vast numbers of spectacular illegal fireworks displays - I just had to sit on my balcony. It was like the online videos of Los Angeles. On both the 4th and 5th sporadic E was about as good as it ever gets,
openings down to central America. No disasters.
And oh yes, finally on th 5th Formula 1 racing restarted with a even better than the usual spectacular fiascos on and off the track.

Phenomenal illegals fireworks all around us too. It was hard to decide what direction to look in so many displays were going on at once. More again last night.

A little over a week ago heartland the next town over had its independence day fireworks early there was a pretty good home show a block away from home we caught on the way back too.

On the actual 4th town of Barnes, Hayward and Duluth all cancelled their fireworks, but we were informed that the next lake down was going to have "3 people privately launching thousands worth of fireworks" that appeared to be the case. Someone also launched a Pontoon boat covered in fireworks off the boat launch we watched from, but he had too many too close together and voiced some worries about it....I think he reconsidered and didn't launch any.

I got my 6M and 10M Heathkits working for the first time last night around 9pm but didn't get anything on those bands. Just some SW on 40 and 80m that one of them covers but my license doesn't allow voice opperation on. 2M was dead too.

Wagon has been in the family my whole life so must be 50 years old. Bumper stickers on it are from the 1976 bicentenial.

I know we're off topic, but boy was the Fourth some night! We live in a small town, but my wife and I went outside on our front porch about 9:30 and listened for about 15 minutes. I sounded like a war zone. Just one continual din of explosions. I never heard anything like that.

I was 14YO when I had a Zenith portable ?, like that.
It was like 7 or 8 years old at the time and the CRT was stone dead. Bought a rebuilt CRT for it and I used it for 3 years, before I sold it. It had a UHF tuner, which was common in this area.
Yours must be a slightly newer model. Mine had the older knobs, like used on the previous models.

The Philco portable is rarely seen. I watched the 57 world series on the one my parents had. I have one in my collection. Yours has a very nice finish.

Man o man, both Philcos, that bugeye Zenith, the best-looking ever RCA portable, that SCHWING Motorola, incredible the whole thing.

I vote to start with the little forlorn Philco metal portable.

Philco made a bullet back version of this set with the same knobs and handle as your red one. I have 2 of those bullet back sets (ironically a red and white and a brown and white missing it's safety glass). The bullet back the back only is for user tube replacement...the chassis is too big to fit through the back so you have to remove the chassis through the front after pulling the CRT...I wonder if the boxy ones are configured the same?

The 48-1000 has been a favorite of mine from the beginning of my TV collecting...the person who sold me my turquoise and white GE 14T series portable that drug this radio collector into TV gave me a Sam's TV repair book from the early days of TV. That Sam's book had in it pictures of the 48-1000 and RCA 8TS30 (and a couple other IMO less stylish sets) they are my in my top 5 late 40s models even today and both were white Wales for me for around a decade.
