Chemtronics Tun-O-Wash a PSA
I got a couple of cans of tuner cleaner in a tube caddy a few months back. I've just been using the rest of the Tun-O-Wash without giving it a second thought. That stuff works so good on tuners, that I Googled the name, and was very shocked to find that they still make it! You can bet I'll be buying a new can when this 40+ year old can runs out. It's not cheap though, $26.99 per 12.5 oz on Amazon.

So do you use the wash first, then the lube?

I haven't tried the lube yet. I just use the wash and it works great.

I'd almost bet money it contains Freon TF solvent. I still have some old Chemtronics tuner wash that is 100% Freon TF. Now THAT stuff works! Best cleaner-degreaser, and doesn't affect plastics. You should follow up with the lube. Too bad it got banned.

High price is due to the substitute propellant. Used to be
$5 a can case lot IIRC. Used to have inhalers called albuteral, freon propellant. Could get them OTC or script for $5. They made them take it out then the FDA let them call it a new drug ( bribery ). Now $35 each & barely work. No longer OTC either. I bet you could fill 50,000 of them with the freon from 1 RAC. Screwed again.......... 73 Zeno

The new Tun-O-Wash doesn't work anywhere near as well as the older stuff, and costs several times as much. Same with most of the current crop of electronics cleaners, degreasers, flux removers, etc.
I still have a couple cans of 80s vintage "Blue Shower", which was a similar product from a different manufacturer. I ration every spritz from those cans, because we will likely never have anything as effective again. A good editorial on the subject here: http://www.logwell.com/editorials/1-1-1.html While I disagree with the writer Re: the reality of the ozone depletion issue, his advocacy of a small quantity exemption for the repair technician seems reasonable. Most of the alternative chemistry that is being promoted as a replacement is much more toxic/flammable/or destructive to plastics than the older formulations were. I took a semester of Chemistry and I still don't know what all that stuff means. But I do know that somebody in the government got paid to say all that ozone depletion BS.

I never paid much attention to ozone but what bugs me
about it is that there is only a short time for data. Almost all is sat data from the 60's on. The world used to go through mega tons of it so maybe there is something there. My oldest son is a met & a denier. Question to ask is the following. ( man made not natural warming) 1) how much $$ is spent on research to prove no warming. Almost ZERO 2) If you find no evidence or negative will you get a grant next year. NO 3) Has the media allowed both sides ? almost NEVER. 4) have your children been forced to watch Al Gore at school with no alternate views then spent days on it ? YES ( its called indoctrination ). Could go on but sliding off topic a bit. 73 Zeno

I'll stay out of the hot stuff as mentioned but the envirofreaks is the blame for it. I'll say the same for this lead free solder BS.Alot more car lub and fluids soak into the ground every day then lead from TVs and other electronic devices dumped in landfills all over the country. Has any TV /electronics techs die because of lead and chemical poisoning. My friend who just turn 97 years young last week used tons of tuner cleaners ,regular 60/40 solder and other chemicals in his shop for 50 plus years and he still here. |

In Ma. the no CRT's in land fills bill was started by
a big junk yard & got support from the left. Reasoning was lead in the glass. Nothing about the rest. Must have passed it on a Friday nite as few knew of it. We found out from our junk man & had a dumpster full of smashed TV's he wouldnt take. Had to call the recycler & it needed "special handling". These thing take on a life of there own & wind up doing things not expected. The camels nose.......... 73 Zeno

"This product known to cause cancer in the State of California".....Okay, as long as I don't use it in California I'm safe.
.....Sees that warning on seemingly every product....Those poor Californians are so susceptible to cancer.

No, the Freon was used as a propellant to pressurize the inhaler. The active ingredient is Albuterol. Huffing pure freon can cause brain damage or a heart attack.... |
