Philco-Ford R-2720BE B&W Set
![]() ![]() Can anyone tell me much about this set? I've had it since early 2000. I picked it up for $1 at an antique store in Volo Illinois that was going out of business at the time, and it worked! I used this as my primary TV for two years, in fact on 9/11/01, I watched the events of that entire day on this very set... Anyway, I've not powered it up since 2004 when it went in to storage in the basement of my folks house. I powered it on in February this year and found it still works except the vertical drive wasn't working. I mentioned it to another VK Member, and decided to look in to it today to see why it's not working, and the 17JZ8 has gone white. If I don't have one in my tube collection I'm going to just order one off eBay. From looking at it, the set is low hours It's very clean inside. I never cleaned it to be honest. It's as it was the day I bought it. All the tubes are still labled Philco, as is the CRT. I took a peak inside the flyback box to see how it looked and it's very clean. |

The chassis number may be a 15J27 or close number.
I have a similar set that responded well to a recap http://videokarma.org/showthread.php?t=261464 At the very least, you will need to replace the paper capacitors in the vertical circuit. PM me for a schematic, I probably have one and will scan it for you.

I for lucky and I had a 17JZ8 spare and tossed it in and the set works as well as it did 15 years ago. ![]() I think for sure I'm going to end up recapping it. I've had it for so long now, I think it deserves it. Last edited by Arcanine; 09-01-2015 at 01:17 AM. |

Nice!!!
I wouldn't worry too much about a recap. Most items post 1965 don't really need it. Not saying they don't go bad, but it's nothing compared to the pre 65 stuff. I think those 17JZ8's had a high failure rate. We seemed to replace a ton in the 80's. I myself had 2 sets that needed that same tube recently. I ordered them, popped em in, and both sets are back to rock solid. |

I may have a Beitmans for that year that has your set - I'm adding it to my check-tomorrow-list.

I've had it 15 years and I know next to nothing about it. It works today just as it did for me 15 years ago. Vertical hold occasionally wanders, horizontal hold is almost all the way to one side of the pot to stay stable, but it's very easily watched otherwise. It's nice to sit down and watch it again. It's a really good performing little set. |

It's in Sams Photofact 895-3 which dates it back to August of 1967.

Hi, If the Philco is a "Q" line set it is in beitmens volume 26 pages 91-93 paper, pages 90-92 pdf. Most likely a 17J27 (A) chassis. Only problems with them were the 17JZ8 the VDR in the vertical circuit and the filter can. Philco used Sylvania CRTs they as a rule had a long life. All the best, tom.j.fla

if most of the tubes are original look at the date codes on them. Caps and speakers may have dates codes as well.

I'll have to look at a couple of the tubes and see what the date codes say. |

Hmm...
So after 6 hours of watching last night, I found it wasp bottomed out on the vertical hold pot. It still remained stable until I stopped watching but the vertical sure does wander to one side of the pot. I think it's time to look in to recapping it. Or could this be a tube issue? |

well....IMHO ( which will be in the minority because most are of the "Oh my GOD, change EVERY cap or she'll blow" camp
I'm not picky on the controls being dead center or not. If you put in a NOS tube which was good, you probably will need to adjust the height and linearity controls. I did on my 2 sets anyway. The Midland color wasn't too far off, the K-mart black and white was wayyyyyyyy off. If the height and linearity controls are adjusted properly, and it drifts... than yes.. a cap in that circuit would be needed. I wouldn't recap the whole set. I've got a 1966 19" RCA B&W running on original caps and it's fine. I think yours is a 67? |
