Early portacolor
I got an early portacolor, white cabinet, degauss switch in the back, and knobs in a vertical row on the far right.
Model on the back is M211HVY-1 Got it for $10 at an estate sale, minus a power cord. Any common issues on these to look for as I power it up? Plan to bring it up slow on a variac. |

Yes - don't power it up until you've replaced the white axial ceramic caps - there are two (maybe more). These Elmenco white caps will spew aluminum foil all over if they fail. The largest is right behind the leftmost potentiomer pair (height and AGC). It is a .1/1000V cap, C268. The other is standing on end, and in my set, was a .047/400V, C409. Both are are in close proximity to each other.
Update - my notes also show I replaced a third one, C555, a .22uf/ 400V in the degaussing circuit, and in mine, also a white elmenco ceramic. It wasn't on the board - just trace the wires off the degaussing switch to the cap. I too have an early portacolor, A WM213HWD-3.

The service info is in Sams 883. It's an HC chassis, which is the second run.

Is that an HC chassis set? I have two similar looking models, and a photocopy of SAM's 883-3 that I could scan and Email to you if you want.

The previous owner wrote that Sams number on the back so it should be correct.

I had one like that more than 20 years ago.... But If I remember right the 5
knobs on the side were kinda flat, not rounded like those look to be.... I remember the one I had had a horrible picture, it was as if it were painted with sloppy water color.... I think it was also a $10. to $15. tv.... I replaced it as soon as I could..... Funny stuff from years ago.... Mine was Uhf/Vhf Same cream color front, wood pattern on the sides, but the back was black not white like that one..... Not seen that before.... Same looking tuning knobs like that set... And I wanna say that I think the screws that are visible top front, on mine were black Philips screws..... I guess when I get my time machine I'll have to go back and tell myself not to throw it out.... .

The three Portacolors, I have are mid 70's models, an HD and two HE's. They don't use the front screws, but use mounting brackets, that hook into the front panel and hold the back on, that way.
