Bad/Busted picture tube disposal

What do you with your bad or busted picture tubes? Do you just dispose of them in the trash, or are you supposed to take them to a certain location? I have a couple that are busted and not sure what to do with them.

I personally would bring them to a disposal center that handles lead (in the glass).

Don't have any bad picture tubes here though that are damaged.

About two years ago around here sanitation has stopped picking up ANY electronics....people wanting to dispose of things have to bring them to the town e-recycling center.

My neighbor has had a six foot tall projection set sitting by his garage for over a year that sat out front by the curb for about 3 trash days. But he has a pickup truck and zero excuses.

Best bet is to smash it to small pieces, and hide it in the trash so they'll pick it up before they know what it is (*was) …

Around here, anything fairly small will be picked up by pickers for the metal content - but with TVs, they are smart enough to smash and grab the yoke and leave the rest.

When I say picture tube, I mean picture tube. Not the whole tv. For whatever reason, I have a couple of tvs that the picture tubes were busted. I have pulled the picture tubes and now need to dispose of them. Yokes and rest of the components are being saved by me. At least for the time being.

Its not PROFITABLE to toss electronics into the trash, hence all the stupid disposal laws... Smash em small and toss them in the trash.....

Tvs around here must not be too dangerous to the enviroment if hole in the wall recyclers around here keep leaving fliers twice a month on our doors wanting tvs, computers, and such..

I remember taking 2 CRTs to a disposal place and the reciever said "What are those things?" Guess they dont recognize them unless surrounded by a tv

The trash company can eat SHIrTs.....

I have to agree here for at least two reasons....

If it does not have the tv shell to protect it, they may not want to take it thinking it will break while they handle it. If it's already broken, then surely the bad stuff will get out and they will have to pay big time to clean it up.... (naturally not knowing anything about it, like the lead for example, it's embedded in the glass, can't get on them...)

If it doesn't LOOK like everything else they get, they sure don't want it.....

Breaking it up more and putting it in several bags and hiding it will most likely prevent a wasted trip in which you will have to bring it home, and then try and hide it in something....

If it is a delta gun color or a pre-1970s monochrome tube and still under vacuum (just no emission) I'd save it so it can be rebuilt when the ETF gets going on rebuilds.

Anything else I'd break up and throw out. Be sure to break the evacuation nipple at the end of the neck to release the vacuum before breaking it up.

I recently obliterated three 27" picture tubes for the very reason of hiding the glass in boxes in the dumpster, haha. The metal I just folded/stomped flat and threw it in as-is. I don't have a vehicle and can't pay to have that stuff hauled away right now. Besides, I like giving the proverbial middle digit to the government in little ways anyway.

I used to just break them up and throw then in the regular household bin. Though with the weight limit it could take a couple of weeks to get rid of a 32" CRT.

Now I screw the cabinets back together after removing the parts I want and drop them off at the recycler. They won't take anything in pieces. If I'm particularly shitty with them that day I'll pull the yoke and anything else of scrap value leaving them with only plastic and glass.

There are effectively no curbside collections here anymore for anything other than the weekly garbage and recycling bins. In theory you are allowed to book one collection a year for things that don't fit or should not go in the bins, but there are so many conditions and limitations that it isn't worth the effort.

Someone please explain how lead alloyed with silica (glass) is a hazard? It cannot leach out of the glass. That's why vitrification is used to dispose of radioactive waste.

If it's good enough for that, I'm not too concerned about tiny quantities of lead contained in glass. Another example of how the elected officials have no understanding of science, unless it can be used as a boogie-man to make a buck.

At least there are a few thinkers out there...... I think though, that it is the rest of the electronics in the tv as a package that makes more of the leaching problem if it ends up in the landfill.... I think also our criminal enterprise wanted to push new crap on us to un-sputter the ekonim'e, the same way the slam older cars with safety and pollution crap to speed along new sales..... They love demonizing CRT's boy, for that lead...... But not those LCD's for the mercury..... at least not yet.....

Yeah, just how dull-performing and ugly can cars get before the public loses interest in new ones?

Think of how much of a pollution problem the mob, uh, I mean government will have once those mercury-laden early-failure LCDs start being disposed of by the skidload.
