Anyone know anything about this set?
Hello everyone,
I found this on my local Craigslist while looking through it. Does anyone know if it's a color set? I would look in the picture but it's too blurry. I think it is mostly because those three knobs look like they are some sort of color adjustments... Though they are probably just brightness, contrast, and horz. hold. I would love for it to be a tubed color set but it's probably just a late 60's B&W hybrid set full of compactatrons. Is tit a hybrid or all tubed? I'm gonna guess hybrid. Also do you have any opinions on these sets?

It could be a hybrid set and SS sets were not unheard of at the time.

A few more questions... Does anyone know if this set would have DC restoration and how was the picture quite on these early 60's B&W sets?

It's a B&W tube set from around '63 and probably built by either Admiral or Wells-Gardner.

Assuming the CRT and other major organs are good and assuming that you do a proper restoration on the chassis, it should be reliable. I wouldn't touch it without first making sure the CRT is good.
It's true that many of these store brand B&W sets from the '60's are lower end series string TV's that often only have two IF stages. Having only two IF stages probably won't be much of a problem when feeding the set with a converter box. If you want a good large screen B&W from the '60's, try to find a Zenith or an RCA KCS136 chassis set. These were better quality TV's that used a power transformer, 3 IF stages, and the Zenith sets used a non-PC board steel handwired chassis. Looking at the wear around the volume knob on this set tells me that it is likely a high hours set and there's no telling what all it will need. IMHO, I wouldn't pay $50 for it - maybe $20 if the CRT is good.

Not many Truetone TVs left these days(I don't think I've even seen one for sale)....If I were you I'd grab it if the CRT is good.
It would be a shame to see it turned into a fishtank or bar.

radiotvnut, I don't know how common old TV's are in your area, but they are rare as hens teeth around here! I will probably go over there and test the CRT with my tester and look and see what kind of condition the PCB boards are in...

It looks like there's an awful lot of wear around the channel selector and what I guess is the volume knob. This set might have led a hard life!
Still, I've never even seen a Truetone in person and if I had the room, I'd probably grab it.

I remember Truetone TV's being sold by Western Auto stores.
The ones I saw were series string designs.
