Philco Portacolor

Snagged this from the bay. Badged as a Philco T5062WA and likened to a Portacolor of the day. Did not know Philco farmed this out. Seller photos for now until it arrives. Does the chassis look like a GE?

Seller says "It is a GE manufactured 11 inch PortaColor, similar to the GE H-2, badged to be sold as a small screen Philco color TV. “T” designates Philco 1969-70 model years.

My Portacolors are long gone and I am returning to the fold except for one sorry example which could be a CRT donor. Stripe tube.

I saw that listed and I'm glad somebody here got it. Hope you post some more pics when you get it.

I was more surprised that GE made a porta color for somebody else. I read they had trouble keeping up with demand, so it's interesting they took the time to run some off for Philco.

They also built some for other private label makes.
Packard bell, or????.
I had a Toshiba built, 16" hybrid Philco, ca 1969.

I've seen one Packard-Bell branded porta-color. During the early '70's, PB used GE as a supplier of many of their TV's. Somewhere around here, I have a 19" C2 chassis GE and a 15" SE chassis B&W that are both Packard-Bell branded TV's.

I've also seen the GE porta-color under the Truetone (Western Auto) brand.

I thought the same thing about the Truetone, but couldn't prove it!
I also saw GE sourced Bradfords , Wards Airlines and Sears sets, but not Porta-colors.

GE also sourced some JC Penney TV's; but, I don't know if there ever was a Penncrest/JC Penney porta-color.

I remember ONE "Truetone" Porta-color that came in (quite often) for repair in our shop. God that thing was a DOG. Not that Porta-Colors were anything to write home about, but having that Trutone name slapped on must have really doomed it. Kind of off topic, but we had a Western Auto in our town, and got stuck doing the repairs on the "Truetone" items. It seemed like EVERYTHING electronic out of that store was JUNK.

It arrived in fine shape and I have several cubic feet of pellets left over.

Powered up just fine. The CRT is tired but useable. Pic gently blooms up and down with the brightness control. A quick screen/drive adjustment gave a good pic. AGC adjustment helped a bit. Focus is dull. Red convergence needs a touch-up.

A complete tube change should help. Need Sams 1032-2 to see if this one has the focus terminals. DC resto is still missing on this one. Color adjustment has enough for several sets. All as I remember with Portacolors.

The only problem is the tint control. Pic is just a bit off on the green side and the control does nothing other than shifting the color to the right like a delay-line control at one end of the control.

Pics upload not working right now. Will try to edit tomorrow.

But the cat likes it as a warm place to sleep. All is well.

does it use the Vari cap or pot for tint?

I had some issues with on off my pc's vector scope was usd to confirm a gated color bar pattern. I needed to tweek up a couple of the transformers in the color demod (in my case I did not have good green at the grid of the crt).

The color delay on some of my is a problem too, as you advance the fine tuning you can see the three colors actually split apart and shift to the right. I end up detuning to bring in color the best. That being said the color is way over saturated when tuned normally, so I was thinking maybe the chroma is too far up the IF slope. My goal is to check out the alignment on one of these in the near future as I get more exp with my BK 415.

I don't recall the tint control effecting the right shift but think I will give it a try now that you mentioned it.

Like most Portacolors, it's taps - pin 9 of the tube connects to either Ground, 270V B+, or Boost (675V) for focus. You'll find a 1 Meg or a 560K in series with Pin 9 - that's the tap resistor.

PM me if you need the Sams.

Cheers,

Also, don't forget the big white Elmenco bomb - the .1uF white cap behind the AGC pot - they spew foil when they go.

Cheers,
