Inherited two wood-cased radios

These have been in my Aunt's basement for decades. She knows I like tinkering with old stereo gear, so she gave them to me.

I've never seen a Northern Electric radio before. It is a Model 650, made in Canada. It has a broadcast band (AM) and four shortwave bands. The Westinghouse is a model 577C, also made in Canada. It has an AM broadcast band and a 31 metre shortwave band.

On the back of the Westinghouse, a printed warning excerpted from legislation of the day reads: Warning. Any person installing or operating this receiving set without first having obtained a license from the Minister of Transport of Canada is liable, on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding twenty five dollars, and the said receiving set may be forfeited to His Majesty by order of the Minister, for such disposition as the Minister may direct.

I think I have found a source for a schematic for the N. E. 650; can anyone put me onto a source for the schematic of the Westinghouse 577C?

The website Nostalgiaair.org has a resouces section with Canadian Westinghouse but that model number is not listed.

Just about everything else is listed, so you may need to find one that is similar say, with the same tubes.

Quite interesting that Canada licensed receivers like Britain did.

good Luck
Dave

Those warnings on stuff like that always crack me up...In Britain, I think they took it seriously enuff to where they had vans w/special receivers to pick up the 455KC local oscillators' outputs on clandestinely operated radios..You'd think the governments would have better ways of using resources than to worry about busting people for listening to UNLICENSED radios & TVs..

Back in the day, they used that to finance the BBC and CBC, I believe, which didn't run commercials. Runs against the grain for us in the US where radio developed differently.

Australia was the same as the UK & Canada to finance the national broadcasting service the ABC & we still had radio & television licences till they were scrapped in 1974.

All Australian made radio & television sets had to have an ARTS&P sticker affixed on the chassis.

I may have what you need, but my CD-rom with those schematics doesn't seem
to work in my Mac. Getting my PC fixed, will get back soon. Regards.

I think Canada used to put some broadcast stations on shortwave, to get extended range to cover the vast stretches of tundra way up north. I remember back in the 70's hearing such stations in the 6Mhz SW band. So it looks like they also used 9MHz. And this radio was designed to receive these stations?

Sounds like a reasonable guess, I don't know. I remember a big cabinet radio that had other bands on it, my family had this in the 1950s. Summer entertainment while camping or at the cottage was listening to various radio bands and stations from all over. We had a big multiband transistor set for that.

Most Canadian radios that have short wave have one long band, typically roughly
6 to 14 or 15 MHz, but for some reason around 1940 some models were available
with one or more bandspread ranges. I have a small Marconi unit that is also
MW/31-meters, and there is also the RCA VR-44 with three SW bands
(19-, 25- and 31-meters):
