1950s Westinghouse B&W TV on Australian Ebay

G'day all.

I regularly check Ebay for vintage TVs in Australia and today I came across a rather interesting B&W TV from the mid 50s, it is a Westinghouse TV:

I was wondering if anyone here knows what model this set is and year of manufacture and if it is an American made Westinghouse set or an Australian made Westinghouse set? I know foreign brands have factories down in Australia that make products specifically for Australia only, PYE and HMV are good examples of companies that did that sort of thing.

That's not a USA built set.
I know Admiral had a plant there and possibly other US firms also.

It is an Australian built set from around the 1958 period.

It is actually an AWA TV under a different brand. AWA sets were sold under the Airzone, Electrice and Westinghouse brands. HMV TV's were also sold under the Kelvinator brand. Badge engineering was quite common even back in the 1950's!

The set for sale looks very similar to the AWA 209C which would probably make it a Westinghouse W172C model.

IS it just me ?? What is the Blue Tint, that I see on the picture tube area ??

Hi Marty,

that blue tint on the CRT is probably the safety shield. I've seen that on several vintage TVs, but I could never work out why the tint is so strong. Most of the B & W TVs have a bluish cast at the best of times, this just takes it to the max!

GE used to advertise "Daylight Blue" TVs. I think they were actually much bluer than daylight. Yecch - a bad idea that sold because it was different, and was claimed to be better. Same stupid idea as blue tinted, otherwise ordinary, auto headlight bulbs.
