Something a little different...An early New Zealand Pye 21" TV Set

Hi guys, thought I'd post up about this Pye TV set. Since television began here in 1960, this is an example of early production made sets in NZ. So this would be classed as 'pure vintage' in my terms. And something oddball for you guys to look at

It is a Pye 21" and the model is called 201T. I got this a few months ago along with a donor for parts. This is now one of the oldest sets in my collection.

The 201T started off in December of 1959 with an initial run of 300 according to my knowledge but not sure how many more were made.

Both sets came from the same person and are not in the best of condition, cabinets/chassis have suffered due to sitting outside or in a very damp shed/garage. One set is slightly better than the other and thats what is shown here.

This chassis is live with series filament chain running P series valves and droppers along the way. The CRT is a Philips AW 53-80, not the sort of tube I'm used to seeing . The chassis mounts on the side of cabinet and the whole thing slides out, making access and servicing very easy.

The schematic/chassis layout is virtually a copy of an Australian design.

In regards to the valve lineup, it uses mostly PCF80/9A8's through out the set.

PCC84/7AN7 - RF Amp
PCF80/9A8 - 1st I.F./Sync Clipper
PCF80/9A8 - 2nd I.F./Sync Separator
PCF80/9A8 - 3rd I.F./AGC Key
PCF80/9A8- Video Amp/Video C.F.
PCF80/9A8 - Sound Limiter/Sound I.F.
PCL82/16A8 - Sound Output/Audio Amp
PCF80/9A8 - Horizontal Oscillator
PCL82/16A8 - Vertical Output/Oscillator
PL36/25E5 - Line Output
PY88/30AE3 - Boost Diode
DY87/1S2 - EHT
PY82/U192 - HT Rectifiers

So I class the 201T as being rather rare and the 'better' one is going to be an interesting project to say the least.
Not sure when I will get to starting on this, but I'll focus on getting the chassis up and running first and worry about the cabinet later.

There is a lot of wax caps and resistors under there which will all be past their 'use by date' so I've got some work ahead of me with this beast.
Hopefully one/both of the picture tubes are still OK. I should test them first and at least I've got a donor set for parts should there be a defective fly-back or vertical output transformer and the likes.

I doubt whether there are many more of this model that still exists most of them would be buried long ago so I've only got these to work with.

"Pye are square." [Groan.] Say, very interesting. Has the same profile as a lot of US sets of that era. Looks like it has two speakers, the big one visible on the side and then maybe a 4" or so out front so you can hear some treble and figure out what people are saying? Probably has good sound for a table set.

There's no resemblence to any GE I worked on.
When I saw the entry of the tube complement, that 6BM8 tube entry bothered me. I looked up the PCL82 and it crosses to a 16A8.
I never ran across a 7AN7/PCC84.
Early 60's Motorola's used a lot of Euro-tubes, such as 15CW5, 9A8 and a 27GB5, horizontal output. Series-parallel configuration. They were Amperex sourced.
Mid-60's, to early 70's Panasonic's, also used Euro-type tubes.

Thanks Dieseljeep, you are right about the PCL82, I realised after you posted the correction Have edited that in the valve lineup.
Interesting how this looks similar to a G.E. anybody got a picture or reference to a similar looking TV? This is going to be an interesting project, I'm not into restoring cabinets but know someone who can so will go down that path when the time comes. Am looking forward to seeing a picture on this eventually. And yeah Pye are 'square' HAHA!
I have plenty more TV's I can post up and talk about, its just the time factor thing really. Likewise I really enjoy seeing your native TV sets too, especially the colour roundies!

Slightly similar to the Australian built PYE W201x series chassis which came out in 2 basic variants W201T for the table version & the W201C for the console version both had a either bottom or side mounted chassis & a 21" CRT Like 21ALP4 or 21CBP4 (short neck & no ion trap magnet) or the Philips equivalent AW 53-xx series CRT's

The attached files are of the early Australian made PYE TV's from a collector in Noosa Queensland "Blingbling81" & these are in his own collection.

Note: I used to own a PYE W201C myself & this is the picture on the left of the attached pictures, the other one is a W201x side mounted variant.

Thanks Daro, those images are interesting the W201C indeed does look similar to the 201T styling wise. I've read some of blingbling81's posts on the Aus Radio & TV forum, and have seen those pictures of his collection. Impressive stash indeed
