rca 730 tv

Hi, I am new to this and would like to ask some advice. I have a chance to get an rca 730 console made in 47. It is missing a few tubes but the wiring seems in good shape. I can get it for $40. Is this a good project to take on. I haven't worked on any tube equipment since the 60's in the navy. Thanks

I would grab it up. That is a very good price. Tubes can usually be found. There are sets of this type and vintage restored and operating today.

I would, but tell me more about it.

Is the cabinet in good shape? Or is it all beat up. Consoles like that can be a bear to restore.

Is the CRT ok? Good if it is, if not, still ok, as 10BP4s are a common CRT.

Is it complete? Does it have the backs, any missing knobs, etc?

It is a fairly desireable TV, being vintage 1947-48.

Have you ever restored electronics before? Combo units can be a handful.

I like 730s, they are a pretty cool early entertainment center.

You can't go wrong at that price. I'd be more concerned about the cabinet than the electronics; unless the chassis has been molested, you can bring it back to life. Get a copy of the Sams Photofact (ask on here for a copy before you buy it from Sams), members here can probably set you up with the tubes without much trouble, too. Then, replace all the electrolytic and paper caps and see how it does.

The 730TV1 is my family's favorite set. It's got everything you need, 78rpm phonograph changer, AM, FM, and a huge 48.0335 sq inch picture. It's got a really rich sound with a large speaker and the picture quality is amazing. Funnily enough it was the second ever TV I purchased and I spent $40 for mine as well.
I say go for it .
