Zenith System 3 Issues
Hi, I just bought a Zenith System 3 from a local thrift store because it is a perfect mach with my 80's Zenith VCR i was useing a 1993 RCA for watching VHS tapes before i got this. This is the issues it is having when i tested it there it had not the lines on all ch.'s but some did (They have basic cable) so i bought it thinking it was just there cable. when i got home i cleaned it out (boy was it full of dust) and to my disappointment i pluged it in to my directv box and it did the same thing on ch. 3 and 4 and to ad to that the picture has got the shakes
i paid $10 so it is not too much of a loss but if it is something easy to fix i want to try it i never repaired a tv before so it would be a good learning experience i just have a funny feeling that it is the flyback going or the crt it had such a good picture at the store ): any ideas would be helpful thank you The model is SA1927W DSCI1042.jpg DSCI1043.jpg DSCI1045.jpg |

Those lines at the top of the screen is likely due to a bad cap in the vertical circuit. The smearing looks like a bad cap in the video output B+ line (probably a 10uf, 300V).
In newer sets, the cap that causes those lines is usually in the 100uf to 220uf range and it will blow the vertical IC if not changed. This set could be old enough to use transistors, instead of an IC, in the vertical output circuit.

how hard would it be to replace the bad caps as i said before i never soldered anything before and would have to buy a solder iron to do it, also would the bad caps make the screen bounce as well? i really do want to fix this tv i just have no idea how to but i am willing to learn I forgot to ad in my last post that the TV was made in 1984.

It's not difficult. The main things you need are a soldering pencil, rosin core electronics solder, desoldering braid, and an assortment of tools (nutdriver, pliers, etc). If you've never soldered anything before, I'd advise you to practice on a junk circuit board first. Also, take note that electrolytic capacitors are polarity sensitive and the negative terminal will be indicated by an arrow on one side of the capacitor. It's very important that the new cap be connected just like the original. If you reverse the polarity, the new cap can blow up and cause other damage to the set.
