Starting signs of Cataracts

I noticed that my CRT may be starting to show signs of cataracts.

I think..

It's at the point where it's quite hard to really get a picture of it, but the left and right sides of the face have a very slightly darkened "cloud" that looks spotty like paper behind a bright light.

Is it cataracts or something else? I'll "try" to get a picture of it, but it's hard to see.. But it CAN be seen when a white screen is on the TV also.

Also, side note, my anode cap has a small hole the size of a finger nail.. How much of a problem is this going to be? It's not arcing or anything like that and otherwise is running fine.

What you described sounds like a "cataract", but I would not know for sure without seeing a picture or two (with the white raster and with the screen dark, ideally).

With your anode cap, you could clean it very well and then fill in the hole with silicone sealer to reduce any chances of problems, but it may be OK as it is now.

Re: the cataract- Are you talking about the 13" Hitachi?
If so, it's highly unlikely that it is developing a cataract. This was more of an issue with earlier color tubes.

I tried to take a picture but the camera just can't see it yet. Only I can see it, but when the TV is in direct sunlight. (I used the TV yesterday out in the driveway hooked up to a fiber optic camera going into a car engine cylinder for diagnosing a friends engine), and when under direct sunlight, this effect showed up..

Here's a picture I took a while ago where some of the marks DID show up.. One is a speck the other looks like a finger reaching in.. They are definitely behind the glass.

Yes, it is for the Hitachi.. If it's not cataract, I wonder what it is, unless it's just a defect in the phosphors I never noticed before.

I'd wager a guess that your crt needs a purity adjustment...maybe the yoke has shifted a tad.

A hybrid CTV in 1980?

What valves (tubes) are in this set?

I have never seen a japan set with cataract. That could be the phosphor coming off the glass. In any case, leave it alone. Any corrective action you try will result in problems

I'm using an older chassis in it from 78, but it was just a couple of compactrons.. Otherwise it was solid state on everything else.
