Sony KV-7010UA puzzler: Different tri-color logo style

I usually pick up on stuff like this right away, but this one escaped me until I had put both my good Sony KV-7010UA and my parts set side-by-side... I see that the three color blob emblem is of rectangular blobs on one, and the usual oval blobs on the other. My thought would be that the rectangular one is earlier, but the serial number is later by a few hundred. Anyone have anything on this?

That's outstandingly bad. Is that the (I won't use names) member who's username starts with a K (not myself), and is a long-time member who turns up for awhile, and then disappears for awhile? I believe he had been known for keeping sets WAY long times... I hope you get that set back, and in good order with a good explanation!

Was that set built for a different market? U.S. market Sony's, only had a "U" suffix. Whats the "A" represent?

This set is somewhat of an enigma, I think. I DON'T think it was ever really officially imported into the US by Sony- My dad got mine in late '68 or '69 from Hammacher Schlemmer in NYC-I managed to screw it up a couple yrs later fooling w/the color temperature settings, we took it to the Sony distributor in Knoxville in those days-Bondurant Bros., & they'd NEVER seen one. Maybe it just had limited distribution in like New York, Chicago, & Los Angeles. And IIRC, it HAS a couple of tubes in it besides the CRT. They got it fixed, of course, & I used it as a "daily driver" til I got one of the "Pushbutton" 15" Sonys in '76.

I never saw one while I was working for a Sony factory repair shop in LA through the '80s and '90s, while I did see and work on plenty of KV-9000s and KV-5000s. But we had the manual on the 7010. That's interesting that your family got one new from Hammacher-Schlemmer. I can't remember if any of the major stores sold Sony that early, but I remember that my mother wanted a portable color set in '69-'70, and only Fedco had Japanese sets. The department stores only carried RCA, Zenith, etc in color sets, and Consumer Reports wrote that the Japanese sets were the best bet for small color portables at the time.

H/S had the reputation back then of carrying unique, special items that weren't easily available elsewhere, the 7010 certainly fit that description. The only other "small" color set back then was the Porta-Potty, & it was a really different sort of animal than the 7010 was.

The Sony KV-7010UA and Sony KV-1210U with walnut cabinet were shown at Sony's New York show room in the fall of 1968. I made a trip to see them. They were being previewed. I placed an order for the Sony KV-7010UA and it arrived in my home in Milwaukee in spring, 1969. My set has the rectangular logo. I suspect later production runs may have changed the logo to the newer style, but that's a guess. I'm surprised, because they seen to have disappeared off the map. They were indeed a specialty item, but I saw them in stores in Milwaukee in 1969. A side-note: The KV-7010UA was available for sale prior to the KV-1210U which some say was the first Trinitron.
