16" Metal Zenith Color
Went to the estate sale in Skokie on Oakton today and bought a Zenith metal portable color set. It has a 16Z8C19 chassis. I'm very excited to get this set, as it is the only metal cabinet color tube Zenith that I have. It does have a solid state IF and four transistors. But doesn't use an IC for color demod, like another Zenith portable that I have. The back had a large dent, that came close to hitting the CRT neck. I wonder what the story was behind that. I was able to remove fairly well with a rubber mallet. Inside was surprisingly very clean. Unfortunately, the top of the 6LB6 horz out came un-soldered.
Also picked up a vintage Wow meter. Probably will never be able to find any info on this thing, but it was too cool looking to pass up.

built like tanks.this should be a great playing set.no halo on crt and i ll bet it takes very little to get it going again.great find!

Glad that set got saved, but sad that I coulden't save it myself.
Those are nice sets, and if you ever want to sell it, or need a spare IF module then I'm your man. Tom C.

Thanks banderson for helping me find this set. I've wanted one of these for 10 years. It is too bad that more were not stuck away some where.
Don't worry Tom C, I'm sure you will find one eventually. And I will keep you in mind if I need to part with it. If nothing else, electronic collectors will eventually need to pass there finds onto the next generation. Does anyone know what year this set was sold? The HOT, VOT, Damper, and several other tubes are Zenith. At first I began to think it was all original. But I found 3 other branded tubes in the color sections. The 6Z10 in the sound section is a 6J10. It has a paper labeling indicating that it is a sample for evaluation only. It must have been from the owner of the house in Skokie. I heard someone at the sale say that he had been an engineer at Bell & Howell.

Is the wire still sticking up on the horizontal output? I've had good luck resoldering that connection in the past.

Are you sure that set is a 15" ? It seems a little larger than that, like a 19", 18V. In your next post, include the CRT type number. Great set and excellent find.

A 1969 chassis number with 1967 style. That is truly remarkable, Kurt! A power transformer truly makes it a tank. Those banana-handle knobs and the control door under the CRT are similar to a metal cabinet Zenith chassis 20X1C38 I had with a
22JP22 CRT. Check the solder connections on the top side of terminal strips where grounds go to the chassis. Dave 63
