What's the real value of this CRT
I saw this CRT on ebay and can't see why the seller thinks it's so valuable. I can see it's a metal glass combo but is there more to it than that? Afterall he doesn't even know if it works.

It's not - he's nuts
Here's a thread discussing this parted out set.Check out his other auctions http://shop.ebay.com/tolefreeitems/m...id=p4340.l2562I have several original shipping boxes for 10BP4s. They had the crt pointing face (heavy) side up with cardboard bracing to support it. |

The value is pretty much zero unless it's tested and good, then it might be worth $100 to someone.
He's had that and the other parts to that set up for months after it didn't sell whole for $400 or some ridiculous price. It was a rotted mess. Maybe he got his feelings hurt after we ridiculed it? |

I've shipped large monitors in the past using the method you discribed. Never had any break.

Expanding foam is excellent for cushioning, but not for compressive loading. Cardboard ribbing works best for protecting against compressive loading. Perhaps a combination of the two might work best.

I use marine foam from U.S. Composites in florida, they have different densitys and expansion rates. Comes in quarts and gallons. 1 part to 1 part mix ratio. Once you mix it you got about 2 min. to get rid of it

oouuh ah. two minutes. that's short notice. I guess if everything was set up and ready it would work. How about cutting it in case one puts too much in and what about removing it once it arrives at it's destination? anybody who received one complain that it was hard to take off?

I see how it works now and I'm dying to try it. When you said RV refrigerator cooling units I got a clear picture of way it will look and act. I may do a thread on this some time as I don't think many people do it this way and I'm sure it would provide a lot more protection than peanuts, cardboard stuffing and double boxing.
UPS and probably Fedex too have what seems like to me a strange way of determining price. The box size can stay the same for a rather large change in weight and the price stays the same. When the box size increases, the price goes up even if the weight is less than the heavier small box. My point is if one can keep the box size small, no second box, then the price for shipping will automatically be less. I have used the peanut double box method and not only is it more work and cost more due to size, it really doesn't provide any more protection than a single box using the expanded foam method. You might want to check uline.com for the instapack foam packets. It's a pouch with the 2 parts of the foam separated inside the pouch. When you rupture the internal divider, the chemicals mix. What you do is activate one, put it in the box, place your item in, activate another, and place it on top and then close and tape the box up. It contours to the object you put in. But if I remember correctly it requires some sort of machine to use them.
I've seen alot of motors and more sensitive items shipped using this, and basicly you would really have to beat the hell out of it to damage the item. Last edited by stusnyder; 04-10-2011 at 04:17 PM. Reason: spelling |

We use the Instapack at work. The machine is a heater that warms the packets before you use them. I think you might be able to just put them in warm water as a substitute. The machine is for convenience.

Uline.com didn't show any expanding foam products but I did find some on ebay called instapak Quick RT. 36/ per carton for 110.08. That's $3.00 per pack, probablly would need 3 or4 at most for a 19" CRT. Not bad cost wise considering the protection.
I think there's an Air Bag system available too that would probably get close to the same protection but I still like the solid foam better. |
