To Part or not to part - 1963 Magnavox Astrosoni
I posted this in the Solid State forum, but i also whated to see what you guys had to say on this end.
I have quite a dilemma that i am facing...I recently bought this 1963 Magnavox solid state record player/TV/Tuner and it has a few issues. 1. The neck of the picture tube is broken off. 2. I tried powering the radio on and the amp does not seem to be working, though the speakers do seem to work. I just dont know what i should do. If i can get the amp up and working relatively inexpensively then id keep it in tact. Its actually a very beautiful and well made cabinet, and id hate to part it out and then do what with the cabinet? Anyhow, what advise do you guys have? ![]() ![]()

what do you mean the spearkers seem to work?
Is that the sep tuner/amp or is it all in one? does the phono work (move) if so does it play thru the amp? Is it a remote set? The CRT looks to be the big one a 27" not easy to find. chassis is easy two work on. Not very collectable, esp with the CRT busted as it will be diff to find a replacement. |

What i mean by the speakers seam to work is that i tested them on something else and they do work. i should have been more clear.
The tuner and amp are both separate. The phono does work, i just need to disassemble it and grease it properly. Yes it is a remote set, and i forgot to mention that i do have the original Phantom remote. I actually have this model's predecessor a 1962 tube unit in pristine condition and the sound it produces is beautiful, so just had a little guilt about possibly parting it out.

if I were in your shoes, I would keep all the parts, and dump the cabinet if you need the space. That way you have replacemtn parts for the working tube model (even the SS astro since it would prob be an easy swap if you ever needed it two. forsure keep the TV chassis and phono as those are a direct drop in replacement. Ebay the tuner and amp, prob not go for much since its SS. but you never know.
Keep the speaker mount boards/fabric/emblems etc...all that takes up min space. May come in handy some day. If you had the space I would just keep it but I know how that goes. |

Hello,
I trust the guy who started the following thread would be interested in the TV chassis from this console, to provide parts to restore his own unit. Good luck! http://www.videokarma.org/showthread.php?t=250197 |

Your Maggie is very silmilar in style to my 1961 23" set. They were well built.
Any chance that your set might be a 24"? I've seen exactly one 27" maggie like that, and It seemed to be much larger in relation to the cabinet size. Of course, I could easily be wrong... Bruce |

![]() I am actually picking up that set tomorrow evening, so I don't yet know what I would need for it. Of course, an identical "donor" chassis would seem to be a no-brainer acquisition. My only concern would be shipping costs since I am sure it is not a lightweight. "My" set has the 27" CRT. |

CTC 17, that would be rad. I have such a hard time turning these units away needless to say parting them out, but if i can bring them back to life, that is always my first choice!

These B/W sets take me back. I grew up in a neighborhood where it seemed like everybody had one of these things in their living room, or den. My parents didnt have one.

Im just going to sit on it for now and see what happens.
Its funny because me and a few of my friends have console stereos or combos. Our parents all laugh at us. |
