Question about Sony XBR

I am Curoius about the sony model number

Some sony televisions has model number containing with "XBR" as I have read up on the operating manual.

I have the Operating manual for the following sets

they are:

KV32V15
KV32V26 AND,
KV32XBR37

According to the spec on the sound system both KV32V15 and KV32V26 has 5 watts per channel and the KV32XBR37 has a whopping 15 watts per channel.

What else differnce between an XBR and non-XBR?

XBR was (is?) Sony's top of the line, they generally have all the features their regular sets don't have including picture refinements.

There are folks here that can give you much better information that I can but I think that's basically correct.

I had a KV27XBR10 from 1990 to 2005, it had the best picture of any CRT set I ever owned.

My sister and her now ex-hubby bought a KV20XBR in '85 or '86. For it's time, it was an advanced TV over most of what was on the market. It had stereo sound with detachable speakers and every kind of A/V jack known to man on the rear. One could even connect a computer to it. That set saw heavy use until the mid '90's, when the CRT got weak.

The KV-20XBR and the KV-25XBR came on the market in 1985, and they were the all-in-one replacements for the Sony Profeel KX-1901/KX-2501 monitors and their separate tuner/switchers. They had incredible performance for their time, even better than the Profeels.

I had one of these, I had the KV25XBR. Beautiful picture. Used tilll 2004 when I gave it to a friend who lost everything in thier home.

As said, it was the "loaded" model of various years. The first ones (KV-20XBR & KV-25XBR, and KP-36XBR) had digital comb filter, multiple RGB and composite inputs, and built-in antenna A/B switch, and all kinds of bells & whistles. They also had a very fine pitch tube, which as Freakaftr8 said, has one of the best pictures of any TV all time. Later however, the CRT was the same from the cheap model to the XBR.

Sony recently put out a notice advising people to stop using there sets made before 1990, due to "risk of fire":

I think I'll still hold on to my old pre-1990 Sony's anyway...

I like the way they DONT tell you what the defective part is. I think I'll keep my old Sony's too.

Are these the sets that use a whole swath of ceramic high wattage resistors and that dreaded "silicon controled switch" in the power supply?

My conspiracy detector indicates however...

I feel the same way. I have a mid '80's 19" entry level trinitron that I got in around 2001 from a TV shop that was about to toss it. I replaced the bridge rectifier, a resistor, and a fuse and the TV still works fine to this day and I see nothing out of the ordinary that would scare me into thinking it might catch fire. The only thing that might go up in flames would be the flyback transformer; and, there's a risk of that with any CRT set. I think this is more of a stunt to scare people into getting rid of their old TV's.

What is different in a KX-1901 or a KV-20XBR bought at a PX versus one bought in anywhere else?

This overheating may, in rare cases, cause the component to catch fire and result in a burn to TV set and at times damage to surrounding property. As a result, Sony would like to ask you to stop using these televisions.

I'm guessing this can either be the flyback or those big resistors...

Since it's sets sold overseas on Military bases perhaps something related to Dual Voltage operation? if they had such a feature that is?
