Local Repair of Injured Admiral Color TV
Something has gone amiss in my '66 Admiral color set.
Hadn't used the set in about 90 days and when I turned it on yesterday the vertical wouldn't hold and what was on the screen displayed at a 45 degree angle. I could smell something burning as well so I quickly turned it off. I looked at it again this morning with the back off and I've got the same thing with smoke coming from the high voltage(??) section on the left hand side of the set.I am in S. Florida and I wondered if anyone local would take a crack at repairing it. I am not skilled enough to fix it myself and I'd hate to dump the set. If there's anyone within a 75 mile radius that can repair this I'd be most appreciative. I'd much rather save this than simply toss and buy another set.

sounds like a yoke if the shape of the was keystone shaped. Dont toss it. Even if its not repairable it may be good for parts. Can you get some pics, esp around the area that you think the smoke was from.

Dave,
Thanks for the PM. I will call you tomorrow. See attached picture. Smoke is coming from that rectangle shaped box on the right hand side. Whatever it is it just seemed to have gone bad all of a sudden. It was fine one day and bad the next.

The flyback transformer is in there. That's not good.
Maybe you got lucky and something else inside went bad. I would see if you can get a model number off the chassis somewhere. Then perhaps one of the good folks here could get a schematic with a part number. Moyers may have the flyback (if that is the only problem). somethings that could make a flyback go bad beside just age would be a bad tube in the HV. perhaps a shorted yoke, again a moyers call. talk some more about your options tomorrow. |

It could be something simple, like arcing caused by dirt or failing insulation. Hopefully you can find somebody close enough to check it out for you.
Whatever you do, DO NOT JUNK THIS SET. Whatever is wrong with it, it is repairable. The flyback would be the worst case, but there are replacements out there if you are patient.

Ihemeyers,
check the model does it have a M after after the LK5541 and see if you can find a chassis number on the chassis. I am checking with moyers to see what they have. |

IHMeyers,
if you can see if you can get a part number off the flyback, you will need to open the back cage, look for numbers printed on the flyback. |
