Crosley 9-425 Portable

It was a good day at the flea market. I haven't been a whole lot this year; on too many of the days that I did go there just wasn't much to see.

Well, Kim had to work today and when that happens on a Saturday I just get this itch to go out and find some junque! The first thing I found was this Crosley, a model 9-425, an electrostatic portable. It's in pretty good shape, with some lifting of the cloth covering that I should be able to deal with. Some tubes are missing, but no big deal there. When I got it home I started to carefully undo the tube socket; with absolutely no effort-really!-the base came off! No wires broke, though, so I cleaned it up and after a lot of careful positioning I finally got it back on there. Once resoldered I backed the Crosley up to my VT-71 (the one electrostatic set I have that is working) and plugged the crt in for a test. It worked! There was an intermittent which I think was caused by at least one of those pins not wanting to solder real well. Later I'll crimp them tight. It could have also been the Moto acting up, though it usually behaves.

Oh, how much did this machine cost me? It would have come home with you, too. Five bucks. Guy was tickled to sell it.

On another table I found a box of 6 used tubes: 3-01A's and 3-12A's. Another five bucks, for the lot. Tested them when I got home and they all show good. Nice to have more spares; gotta dig in to some of those battery sets again one of these days.

There was also a guy there with 4 nice 30s radios-a Gloritone cathedral, a small Zenith tombstone, plus consoles from Crosley and Delco. He was not taking part in "five dollar days" though! $100 each, I probably should have bought that black dial tombstone and flipped it, but money is too tight for me to play those kinda games.
