Four decades of Sony Trinitron

Thought this was kinda cool, and I was bored as he *double hockey sticks*.

In the picture is (oldest to newest)

1970 Sony Trinitron KV-1220U
1981 Sony Trinitron KV-3000
1996 Sony Trinitron KV-9PT50
2003 Sony Trinitron KV-40XBR800

I have them all connected to my AT&T Uverse thru Channel 3.

I just got finished repairing the XBR800, as it had fried and extrememly underrated sync IC's. Needed numerous adjustments in the service menu, as I think the CRT is a bit weak. Touched up the convergence, screen, drive and cutoff controls as well as focus. Looks good now.

The KV-3000 was fixed last month. It had the usual bad connections on the D board and a bad HOT. Touched up numerous adjustments like convergence (PITA) and drives/screens, deflection (pincushion) and a few other tweaks. (believe it or not, this set is the brightest and sharpest of all the Sony's I have. Emphasis and workmanship was really placed into this set when it was built. Kind of like the pride that RCA and Zenith put into thier sets in the 50's thru the 70's).

The KV-1220U I picked up from a member on the forums a few years back, working, just needed slight adjustments and the cabinet repaired.

The KV-9PT50, works great, these little sets rarely crap out. Really bright CRT.

Hey thanks for doing this and posting the pictures. It's cool to see two of the biggest Trinitrons of their eras along with one of the smallest and one of the first models. Interesting how one has knob tuners and the others all have frequency synthesis - none with pushbutton varactor "express tuning" so common in the mid 70s to early 80s. Also, your sets have either the original, squared-off Trinitron logo or the final 90s Trinitron logo - none with the 80s-era Helvetica typeface.

BTW: Do you need any plastics/cabinet parts on that 40XBR800?

Hey guys, thanks. Next I am going to add the KV-7010UA into the mix. I had it apart and I was trying to straighten out the stamped steel. I put it back together. BTW, extremely bright raster on the 7010!

Charles, thanks for the offer. The cabinet of the XBR is flawless. I did however break the hinged control door. The hinge snapped in moving. I superglued it and it's holding well.

Ok, here's the pics with the KV-7010UA in with the mix.
This lil set was a peach to fine tune and tweak. It's close to done (except the finicky horiz lock and horiz width is just too wide.

"Sony" <<Trinitron>> where the FINEST picture tubes in the whole world. Sadly, they where replace by L.C.D. and Plasma.
